It's the time of year when I can listen to the guiltiest pleasure song ever recorded, A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris De Burgh. I remember first hearing this in Boots in Leeds city centre circa 1996 while Christmas shopping and being genuinely transfixed by that chorus

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words. But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.

Was at a Christmas party with a load of clergy last night and as some people were leaving they found a person collapsed on the street outside so the Verger took over and called an ambulance and sent all the clergy away because "if they wake up surrounded by priests that'll just make things worse"

This is quite literally the job of an academic. Also, LLMs don’t do this either! It regurgitates what it statistically calculates as the most likely outcome. Stochastic parrots all the way down!

Got an ADHD appointment with the GP tomorrow. Filled in the form, done a list of ways my brain is borked. Think I am going to have to go private and somehow suck up the cost of that and meds because the thought of waiting to deal with this *gesturing expansively* is unbearable. Wish me luck.

Happy Winter Solstice everyone. One of my first oil paintings from 1996 of Avebury where I went to primary school. Being there had a profound influence on my work. Lighter days ahead.

A while ago,
@wangleberry.bsky.social
and I made a shocking discovery. By writing a caption, hiding that caption, and having another person draw an unrelated Thing, the caption and the drawing inevitably resolve into a perfect New Yorker cartoon. We've blown the whole thing wide open. Thread:

I called my mom just now and she answered all flustered and said “Erin? Just a second right now Dad and I are screwing in the tree“ and it took me a very long pause to realize she meant they were putting the Christmas tree up.

This might be construed as a tedious 'awareness raising' thread, but Xmas can be a decidedly mixed bag for autistic & ADHD children & adults. The change in routines, the amped-up sensory stimuli, the flood of semi mandatory social gatherings, the unusual food, the unpredictability around gifts...

I have just found out that some reprehensible fucking dork has made an AI chatbot based on the character I played on The Magnus Archives and *it has my voice*. I genuinely don't think I have ever felt so fucking violated. My actual voice. Saying things I have never said. I feel sick.
