i spoke to columbia journalism review about being an independent journalist right now, the influx of streamers in minneapolis and press using these community defense networks as their sources or even leaking directly from them, which i find to be really unethical behavior

My asks would be 1) continue reporting every ICE sighting in parks so we can better deploy our resources proactively 2) work with your neighbors to determine if police presence in your neighborhood makes people feel more secure or less safe, so we can tailor our requests in specific areas

We are also awaiting outcomes from multiple court cases working their ways thru the system in hopes of gaining more tools in this situation. I want to acknowledge again the frustration and anger this situation is causing, and I want to assure you nothing is a higher priority for us than this issue.

I feel our park officers should be stationed nearby to observe and protect community members from violence. This has been communicated to the superintendent directly. I know there was a meeting with staff regarding this today, and I anticipate more updates tomorrow.

Having said that, I (and I believe multiple other commissioners) have asked that the superintendent take actions to close off parking lots where ICE has been staging & agitating in our vulnerable communities. I have also asked that we treat these actions like any other hotspot of unlawful activity-

I understand this is extremely frustrating because we are dealing with a dangerous paramilitary and lawless force. Trying to remove them from parks within the confines of the legal system feels like trying to maneuver with our shoes tied together in this instance.

Pretty much the original sin of much of this. Would also want to parlay this into crushing companies like Palantir which profit off of oppression and privacy destruction. With Texas special Senate results there could be a real opportunity to radically shift things. Just have to keep fighting back.

I echo my colleague, Commissioner Carvajal Moran, and call on @governorwalz.mn.gov to stop making performative statements about “the world watching,” and take concrete actions to ensure the safety of our neighbors. Too many Minnesotans are on the brink of financial crisis due to ICE actions.

Not a judgment and IDK how you overcome it but...it's striking that every time a fresh national news story drops about ICE in the Twin Cities (ProPublica today), a lot of people respond with "Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad" and everyone in MN goes "Yes and it's a hundred times worse"

This is an egregious violation of public safety and the constitutional rights of our residents. ICE is a lawless agency and must be stopped. We will use all options available to us to prevent ICE from staging and causing harm in our parks.
