Prequel apologists over the years have managed to conjure a better version of these movies in their heads, but they remain quite bad from a basic filmmaking level. There are bad movies that are still fun to watch, not these

the idea that *storyboards* are a cost-inefficient part of filmmaking does just seem bizarre on its face to me. you never hear of a movie going over budget by spending too much on storyboards

Whether a movie is good or bad should be the beginning not the end of any conversation about it. It's also the least interesting question to ask about a movie.

Watching Deep Blue Sea. One of my favorite examples of a movie that knows what it is & commits to being that. The shocks are foolproof. I love that they give the cook (LL Cool J) his own one-man survival story apart from the group. Sturdy structure. Every action sequence has its own mini-narrative.

Forgot that Paul Zindelâs estate sued over similarities between THE SHAPE OF WATER and one of his plays, in which a cleaning lady at a laboratory discovers a super-smart dolphin being cruelly tested by scientists. She forms a bond with it and tries to sneak it out in a hamper. The parties settled.

As of May 19 2026, the TOGETHER plagiarism lawsuit has reached the point where the court is attempting to get the parties to settle at mediation. Normal stuff. The litigation still appears to be moving forward. Very curious to see where this goes.

Producers of Obsession (in their 40s making their 40th feature) had nearly 1 million but paid their early 20s crew min wage, no profit share or gas money & worked them to the bone. Some were volunteers. Should be a scandal but abuse is normal in indie film.

I really liked BACKROOMS! Very compelling stuff for me, especially when it's using its grand genre metaphors to tell the story. It does feel a little dramatically inert in dialogue scenes, though, which is a problem for a movie with these particular aspirations. But overall, I'm impressed.

Don't buy that FIGHT CLUB 4K disc. It's too damn dark, and you can see in the comparison below that they've gone in and done beauty touch-ups to erase texture on actors' faces. Look at the cheeks and forehead. Source:

Very nice to see OBSESSION having its moment. It's a well-directed debut anchored by one incredible performance by Inde Navarrette. Curry Barker has a very tight control over the film's tone and visual language, but found myself wishing it felt a little more uncontrolled and wild.
