This is why it annoys me when people try to make it seem as if this is how things have always been. There was a time when greater literacy and reading as a part of everyday life for people of every class was a national mission. Then it changed drastically and now weāre here.

GenreVision is the best thing I've done with my life. If you listen to the show at all, I don't have proper words to thank you. The fact I get to do a movie club every week and people actually show up never ceases to floor me. Check out our awards show if you wanna hop on and join the fun.

Generative AI is a blight. Over and over, digital audio and video professionals like
@deannachapman.bsky.social
and myself are being told that our human skills and experience are simply no longer valued. I legitimately donāt know what to do at this point.

So far this morning I've seen podcast/video producer jobs that are unpaid and <$4 above Seattle's minimum wage. Amazon's AI Video Producer and Editor role? $100-183k salary with benefits. This is my personal hell.

What Drew said. The third movieās already made over half a billion dollars globally. People show up for AVATAR, despite it being one of those things lots of folks are content to tear down despite never having seen. Alas, people are entitled to their opinions, even unearned ones. (AVATAR is fine.)

Books, poems, film, etc. may require retraining a brain to slow down. And it's important bc while scrolling social media pushes the happy button, it rarely provides actual happiness. It's like food with no nutrients; your brain ate a lot but it's still starving for things that scrolling can't give.

In 2025 I felt a need to mostly shut out depictions of real world suffering in my movie intake. I happily watched people get eaten by sharks in DANGEROUS ANIMALS, or kids getting ghost-murdered in BLACK PHONE 2. But if you tried to make me watch IF I HAD LEGS IāD KICK YOU, I think Iād run screaming.

STAR WARS: Cāmon dude donāt even act like itās not fuckinā STAR WARS. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: Lacks the steel-hard story structure of the first. A huge upgrade in many other regards. RETURN OF THE JEDI: Super pulpy, with Robert E. Howard/Edgar Rice Burroughs stuff. Oddly structured, pleasantly goofy.

While weāre at it: PHANTOM MENACE: Silly kid stuff, wildly unbalanced, the best-looking prequel. ATTACK OF THE CLONES: A green screen voidspace nightmare. Garish pixel mush with awful dialogue. REVENGE OF THE SITH: Not especially enjoyable, but it does tie up the prequel story in a tidy fashion.

ROGUE ONE: Another aesthetic/sonic exercise that successfully creates the Star Wars Feeling. Provides the mere illusion that Star Wars has grown up. SOLO: Like a feature-length version of the prologue sequence from THE LAST CRUSADE. A hurried wiki article about how a guy got his signature stuff.

THE FORCE AWAKENS: Successfully evokes the Star Wars Feeling. Is barely more than an aesthetic/sonic exercise. Overly reverent and hollow. THE LAST JEDI: Boldly irreverent and visually rich. Substantial. Kinda cloying and cutesy. Tries a little too hard to be clever. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER: Yikes.

I said it and I stand by it! A GOOFY MOVIE is a home run and stands tall next to any of Disney's other classics of the era. In fact... A GOOFY MOVIE > TARZAN, MULAN, HERCULES, and POCAHONTAS Come at me, Disney pervs. (I like most of those other movies)

A GOOFY MOVIE is some seriously weird shit. It's also an important film from Disney's Renaissance era, since it was so keen to poke fun at the sacred cow that is the Disney brand.

One of my momās favorite movies was Rob Reinerās STAND BY ME, which she encouraged me to watch at an age close to the ages of the boys in the story. By pure happenstance, STAND BY ME was the last movie my mom ever watched. It was on the TV in her care facility on one of her last talking days.

A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?" He said, "I don't know, like $500?" Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

People who argue "who cares it's just for kids" all I can say is fuck right off. Kids deserve thoughtful, well-made movies that challenge them just as much as adults do. Kids aren't stupid, and they remember how movies affect them basically forever.

If you don't want to play or watch or read something, that's cool and good and fine. There's plenty of stuff I don't want to watch or read or play and I don't even have to bother coming up with a good reason or explaining it to anyone.
