From the bad place. Guess we'll see how this all turns out.
pinned post!
I've finally figured this place out. Dems are feckless do-nothings who rely on interviews, letters, and performative DOA bills so they don't have to fight. Progressives are trailblazers who use interviews and social media to talk to the masses, and file messaging bills so ppl know they're fighting.

This is an important point. Same thing for ICE surrounding polling places ā they donāt really need to, they just need to sow enough fear.

There's a long time between now and November, and the damage that has been done is a lot more than a few good election cycles can undo, but it's pretty important to get a first good election cycle ASAP...

So the actual directi e isnt quite as stupid as the headline suggests. The proposed order would direct the Pentagon to buy electricity from coal-powered plants, not actual coal.

this is one of the big problems with a too-online campaign - they were utterly convinced they'd memed their way to victory rather than riding the global anti-incumbent backlash wave (where they did worse than most) people the world over just wanted to throw the bums out, that's all it really was

Less than 80k decided the vote in 2016 that ushered in Trump & determined the makeup of the Supreme Court. There's a reason the GOP are going all out to suppress/obstruct voting & intimidate voters this November. If you're depressing votes for the midterms, you're enabling the GOP.

Hey, remember twelve days ago when there was an election in Saint Paul, crawling with ICE agents? And the Democrat won something like 95% of the vote? Online whiners can be scared of ICE all they like. Regular voters aren't. We'll get out there and win.

"They're going to put ICE at the polls in the midterms!" Cool, but why aren't they doing it now? Like there are elections happening all the time. Some of which are big deals, like the one for the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the NYC mayoral election. Why is Trump not deploying ICE for those?

Americans want idols. Kings. Gods. "great leaders". But in a democracy it is the VOTERS who are supposed to lead. Place NON psychopaths into positions of power. We need to do better. Be wiser. Make better decisions. When you get to that final Y junction every 2-4 years, be smarter.

In a binary system we use our vote to give one side more power OR the other. There is no magical 3rd outcome. 2 party system. Our actions move the needle one way or the other. Had Harris been elected, the nation and the WORLD would be better off. That is a FACT. Anyone pretending otherwise is lying.

It's a special brand of nihilism they offer: "both parties are the same and would have been equally bad for human rights, but Democrats should have convinced people otherwise and I'm angry at them alone." It's an argument for voter suppression or powerlessness.

Whatās great about JD Vance is that unlike Miller, he doesnāt *want* to be hated. You can tell it eats at him that he is the object of universal scornāthat yet again he has given up everything in search of love, and found only contempt. This is what he deserves.

And that situation is terrifying but also, for a writer, paradoxically boring in one sense. The most important thing to say in the moment is obvious to the point of banality: The people ruling us are corrupt, lawless authoritarians who demonstrably lie constantly about everything.

But we are now in a frankly cartoonish situation. It really just sort of IS good vs evil. There arenāt actually many good points worth considering on the MAGA side, and it really is all just lies and bigotry. And people who thought their job was teasing out nuance are having trouble adapting.

Which is to say, pre-Trump, it was more often than not the case that an analyst was doing useful work if they tried to combat the tendency toward caricature & tease out for the reader how things are more nuanced than the cartoon, that there are valid points worth considering on all sides, etc etc

For most of my adult life, very broadly speaking, it has usually been the case that partisans and people who donāt get in the weeds of policy want to see politics through the lens of a simple, cartoonish moral binary with a good side & an evil side. And *usually* itās more complicated than that.
