Another No Kings rally, another opportunity for the Alt National Park Service to cash in. AltNPS is an engagement farming social media account that sells stickers and t-shirts. They do not have a "team tracking threats made by MAGA." Even if they did, what exactly would that team do?

Exactly! Court documents and legislative proposals are complicated, which is why we turn to journalists and experts to interpret them for us. Really good point here: AltNPS isn't just trying to rip off journalists, they're trying to REPLACE the role of journalists in the eyes of their followers.

AltNPS has been including links in their posts more often, especially compared to this time last year. But they still try to avoid it, and linking directly to court docs is still their favorite way to look like they're providing a source without actually crediting a journalist.

It's hard to keep up with the sheer volume of AltNPS's posts, but the longer I put this off, the harder it'll be. Here's a collection of AltNPS's stolen or unsourced posts from the last couple of weeks 🧵:

They're playing the hits, folks. Back in 2017, whoever controlled the AltNPS account credited the artist Robert Bissell for the artwork (even if the word "RESIST" isn't in the original). These days, they don't bother.

It's been a crazy couple of weeks on my end, but I'm slowly putting together another roundup of AltNPS's stolen posts, and will be posting it soon. Also working on another article! This time, it's about the times that AltNPS posted outright fake news, which gets pretty wild.

I thought I recognized the name Scott Presler (even if AltNPS spelled it wrong): he's a right-wing dork who was screaming about voting machines in New Jersey back in November. AltNPS took his baseless right-wing fearmongering and flipped it into baseless left-wing fearmongering.

AltNPS's post from yesterday mentions suicide attempts by ICE detainees, so here's a reminder that back in September, they removed any mention of suicide suicide attempts by ICE detainees from a WIRED article they stole. I'm never letting them off the hook for that. bsky.app/profile/altw...

This post has a lot of slippery issues, and it'll take some time to dig through them. But first, I want to make a point of AltNPS's laziness, and how it manifests in some very weird ways 🧵:

On Bluesky, AltNPS simply reposted Spencer's post. On Facebook, they removed his name, and didn't give him credit for his work. AltNPS has stolen credit from journalists many times before, but it's especially crass to do so when we're talking about lives lost in war. Jesus.

I don't think AltNPS is going to actually make a MAGA pivot, but their increasing credulity towards people like Massie and MTG is a little concerning. Don't trust these people!

Underneath all the lies, all the plagiarism, all the LARPing, there's a core of pure cringe that AltNPS just can't escape.

I was wondering this, too. I dunno about an actual sponsorship (AltNPS would have to put their real name on record somewhere for that), but at this point, I have to wonder if AltNPS has a stake in Anthropic or something.

Posts like these really shatter the idea that AltNPS is any kind of legitimate "coalition." They're exactly the same as every other bottom-feeding engagement farm #resistance grifter. They're not resisters! They're just posters.

AltNPS is absolutely flooding their feed with post about Anthropic and OpenAI, and thankfully, they're getting a mixed response from the audience. It's weird for a supposed coalition of park rangers to be so gung-ho on AI, and I'm glad (some of) their followers are clocking that.

Exactly! AltNPS doesn't get to claim that they "don't support AI" when they, just as an example, cited an imaginary Bloomberg article back in July. They've also shared PLENTY of AI-generated memes. They're not opposed to AI use. Come on now.

Given the alternative, I'm glad Anthropic at least refused the admin's demand to use their products for outright evil. But are we really turning this into a battle between the "good" AI company and the evil AI company? Really?

Circling back to this post from a few weeks ago, because I think it gets at something important: an account posturing as a "resistance coalition" of government insiders has to make its audience feel involved and important. It's part of the fantasy.

I almost couldn't tell if this was plagiarism or just "rewriting the article, but worse." Every part of AltNPS's post is a clunkier version of something Bracey Harris wrote in the first few paragraphs of her article for NBC News.

A very weird side story from yesterday: I found at least two different FB accounts, both claiming to be Democratic Socialists, that constantly post the same style of "watercolor-ified" pics of political figures. Is this the new meta for FB engagement slop?

On Facebook, AltNPS posted this AI-generated pic of former ICE agent Ryan Schwank, along with this caption. A quick search for the source led me to a bizarre turducken of low-effort slop.

It's been just over three weeks since I created this list of journalists whose work has been cribbed by AltNPS, and I've already had to add nine more people to it. And that's not including Jim Vertuno (AP), Ben Protess (NYT), Hiroko Tabuchi (NYT), and Regina Medina (MPR), who aren't on Bluesky.

Here on Bluesky, AltNPS just reposted @karlbode.com's post. Great! No problem there. But on Facebook, where AltNPS has many times more followers, they just reworded his post and didn't give any credit.

AltNPS seems to have learned about Project Salt Box from a commenter a few hours ago. Did they thank that person? Did they give them credit? No, of course not. They just posted the name of the website like it was a secret code and didn't explain what it even was.

As far as I can tell, the "information shared" here comes directly from AltNPS's Facebook comments, none of which are sourced. AltNPS doesn't share their data, provide details, or explain how they ended up at "over 26." They're just taking random FB commenters' word for it.

Genuinely not sure why AltNPS doesn't just say Ghislaine Maxwell's name, but they're sure going out of their way to avoid it. And because they never, ever use alt text, her name doesn't even show up there, either!

AltNPS stole this from Regina Medina's article in MPR. It's basically word for word. The second paragraph is LITERALLY word for word, with a single change. This is one of those times where we have to ask: does AltNPS think we're stupid?

AltNPS seems a lot more comfortable leaning into the LARP on Facebook than they do here on Bluesky. This post calling on their followers to "be careful who you trust" is exclusive to their Facebook page.

Good example of the "Uno reverse card" defense I sometimes see people employ when defending AltNPS. The argument here is that it doesn't matter that AltNPS doesn't credit their sources (if they provide one at all) because the audience should just Google it! Do your own research!
