Even if we're to believe that the kid "ran from his mom and into the street before he was hit," as the cops claim, we need streets that allow kids to be kids. As
@sgoodyear.bsky.social
says, children "dart." That's what they do. Lower speed limits enforced by design would prevent these tragedies.

Gotta call bullshit. Note how this concern is never brought up for one-way, one-lane streets with no bike lane with parking on both sides leaving no room for drivers to pull over to make way for emergency vehicles. Same thing with big arterials such as Flatbush or Atlantic that are often jammed.

"School Streets" have become a thing to watch. Even the loudest high-traffic neighbourhood trumpets will mumble "Except outside schools, of course", but this ignores how (1) kids don't live next to their schools and need to get to the School Street safely and (2) kids go to places that aren't school

This kind of neglect send the message that cycling is a cute pastime and not a serious mode of transportation that people rely on. Weird behavior for a bike share company.

"Cities are meant to stop traffic. That is their point. That is why they are there. That is why traders put outposts there, merchants put shops there, hoteliers erect inns there. Rationally one wants to have traffic *stop* there, not go *through*." —Kirkpatrick Sale, Human Scale.

“In Utrecht, the bike is not an end in itself. It is a means to create a liveable, healthy, climate-friendly city for all. The success can be admired in the inner city. It is lively and yet quiet at the same time. Here, it's noticeable: Cities aren't loud; only cars are, and they play no role here.”

I actually agree with Jimmy Nederlander about bike lanes in Times Square but not in the way he means it. We shouldn't have narrow bike lanes along the curbs near Broadway theaters. What we should do is completely ban cars from most of the theater district.

We expect more from CM
@galeabrewer.bsky.social
than this. There are ways to make the UWS more appealing for families and more livable for everyone. Continuing to fight over every single free parking space ain’t one of them. That’s the kind of thing that’s actually chasing families out of NYC.

Street improvements aren’t a popularity contest decided by who screams the loudest and most often. Letting a tiny minority hold the curb hostage because they want to keep getting something for free should be embarrassing for a progressive politician in 2025.

So how do we best manage it as advocates for change? Here are eight strategies we recently presented at the Velo-city Conference.🧵

Neighborhood streets, where kids used to just tool around on bikes, haven’t changed. But what probably has changed is the kid’s friend’s dad, who lives next door, likes to drive his SUV fast and thinks people shouldn’t be in the street.
