AI tech bros promising to allow you to talk to a digital simulacrum of your dead relatives as a false comfort during your natural process of grief are, I’m afraid, in contravention of the 1736 Witchcraft Act, the 1951 Fraudulent Mediums Act, and should be hanged. I don’t make the rules.

I'm sorry for being months behind on Realms Unknown - but about Tamora Pierce's Alanna series: Alanna is 11 in the first book, and I read them first when I was 9 or 10 (in 1986-7), and they were terrific for that age.

I spent a lot of money on ebooks yesterday and it was delightful. I've been reading this author's books from the library and I just realized I needed the rest of the series. But now the payment service offers to track my purchase delivery, but it's an ebook. I have it. I downloaded it.

Sometimes I hear people talking about things like productivity and profitability - and I realize that I don't want to see a growth in either of those things. Living standards? Sure. But we don't need more productivity or profitability unless it leads to more free time and more money for workers.

Sometimes being an activist can feel defeating. But then I remember that humpback whales were considered so endangered that an entire Star Trek movie was made about them in the 80s. Now, because of the work of thousands, humpbacks are now a classified as a ‘species of least concern’.

Trump DOJ is now looking at ways to ban transgender Americans from owning guns. Worth noting that the Nazis did the exact same thing to the Jews. Also worth noting they have no plans to ban right wing white supremacists from owning guns, even though they commit a vast majority of all mass shootings.

My 5-year-old was happily biking ahead of us and stopped at a stop sign. We watched from 30 feet behind as an SUV sailed through their stop sign without stopping and without even slowing down or looking up. My son had the right of way. If he had gone - my heart can hardly bear thinking about it.

north american zoning exists to protect wealthier homeowners who live on quiet streets in leafy suburbs from the externalities of the american city, the brunt of which is faced by renters (usually) in denser housing living on surface stroads subject to noise+air pollution, and traffic injuries👇
