You either believe that it's acceptable for a nation to deny self-government and self-determination to 33% of its population indefinitely or you don't, and virtually everybody in the "traditional bipartisan consensus" agrees that it is, and that's why the center isn't holding anymore.

8) Interview misses the whole "civil war" element of the Fr Rev AND neglects international dimension. Things could have played out v differently if crowned heads across Europe had honestly said "constitutional monarchy in France is an excellent idea!" Instead, they encouraged Revolution's enemies.

6) From late July 1789, there's an UNSTABLE AND FRAUGHT alliance (of sorts) betw liberal elites (some of each: lawyers, govt officials, clergy, aristos) and Paris tradesmen, artisans, etc. Declaration of Rights declared the Nation sovereign, but who was to speak for it? THAT was the question.

5) When they get to the Storming of the Bastille, I think they go a bit wrong. Yes, the crowd was largely thinking in terms of defending itself (and the soldiers at the fortress may have been too). But it wasn't immediately greeted with enthusiasm by the would-be constitution-writers in Versailles.

2) It's just weird in the year 2026 to read an interview that mentions economic growth in 18C Europe and says nothing about empire. Britain and France were at war for most of the 1700s BECAUSE of empire. Sugar in the Caribbean was to the 18C as oil in the Middle East is today.
