and now 15 years later we have some of the largest institutions scraping the very same library for financial profit with zero recourse. This dude died for nothing; An act of informational philanthropy was punished while corporate greed of a worse degree goes unpunished.

assuming no "i need to play [new game] with my friends"... the used market!!! consoles - Xbox One / PS4 if paying for a subscription fee is acceptable - Xbox 360 if not PC - older computers with dedicated GPUs or slightly newer computers with nice APUs covers about everything you'd want

Early adopter pog but also reminder that you can get an android based emulation machine for like 200-300 & a massive community centered around basically doing everything to help you load it up with like your entire lifetime of games + most of them can run Silksong. You can run free with the wind.

I desperately want a Ford Fiesta EV. They've been teasing it for years now. My old Fiesta was a glorified golf cart that could do [legal highway speeds]. Give that lightweight body the power of electric motors? And Android Auto? I would be in love.

Dreams are weird. Like, I dreamed that I was grocery shopping in backwoods Appalachia and saw they were selling hotdogs with shrapnel. And I thought, oh yeah, to use for ___. I even had a memory in my dream of accidentally making one to eat and being frustrated. So of course I bought a pack.

Celeborn: Tell me, where is Gandalf? For I much desire to speak with him. I no longer see him on Slack. Galadriel: Gandalf the Grey did not log on today. His status has fallen into shadow. Legolas: He was laid off by the Balrog of Morgoth. Our roadmap needlessly prioritized a Moria-first strategy.

What’s fascinating to me about steampunk is how long-lived and widespread it was despite the genre not having a single definitive work. For most people it was purely an aesthetic. It was as well-known as cyberpunk but it didn’t have a Neuromancer or Snow Crash you could point to and say “Like that.”

you don't seem to have less of an axe to grind if you see she had to beat anti-imcumbent/biden bias and forget she didn't try very hard to do exactly that it is of course a party wide cultural failure of unaccountability after massive losses, but she had agency.

I've really hated seeing Plex's death spiral over the past decade or so. I still use it, but I got the lifetime pass when it was about $100... a price at which I could overlook the flaws under the pretense that it'll improve. At this point I can't recommend others make that investment.

The actual problem is far more banal: at Google you get promoted for shipping new things, not maintenance. Maintaining existing things is seen as dead-ending your career. This is why everything corrodes over time, and why some products just die

It's been fun seeing everyone deservedly dunk on this quote, but it's also kind of depressing how the idea of physically owning software died such a quiet death. Yeah there are programs that I physically own that require now-dead activation servers, but at least I can crack those with impunity.

Here's what I don't understand... How can they even charge SALES tax on something you never actually own. You're renting it... you never own it, there's never a point where you can say, "Okay, this version works best, let's freeze this version & buy it."

Governments can't touch VPNs technically or commercially. The mess they'll make if they try will be off the scale
