The best advice people can get in the hobby is to play a lot, but not buy a lot. Especially for the first couple of years. Tastes really evolve over time. Nobody needs every Carcassone expansion, to name one.

I think it's...notable...that after a board gamer has been in the hobby for more than a couple years, one of the primary ways they interact with their collection is trying to find a way to sell/donate/give away a good chunk of it.
