The overpoweringly sweet smell of the hawthorn is produced by the chemical trimethylamine. This is also one of the first chemicals exuded from a decomposing corpse. Perhaps explaining why hawthorn and its blossom has long been linked with death in British & Irish folklore...

An alarming feature of the British polity is how far to the right the establishment parties have moved. The UK Labour govt is now further right than Thatcher & using buzzwords & policies derived from the 1970s British National Front. In England, only the Greens are normal politics*.

The IDF just ordered the *entirety of south Lebanon* to be forcibly displaced. They are emptying the land of its population, creating a massive crisis, and will now proceed to further annihilate large parts of Lebanon. The very nation state of Lebanon is being destroyed.

. The French writer and philosopher Voltaire once said 'Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.' 📚 He also drank up to 50 cups of coffee a day, often mixed with chocolate. I think we're onboard with this.

Working in social care I've had multiple years with no rise in pay. If I do get one it's always under 2%. Because I'm employed for a charity there's always the element of it being vocational & not about pay. And we are told the injuries/danger element is just part of the role of supporting people.

IMPORTANT REMINDER that if you find yourself sat next to Americans on the Eurostar, you have to convince them there's a station half way down the tunnel where all the staff live. And tell them to watch out the window for it. This is an important Anglo-French tradition.

Exactly this. I find the idea that life’s outside the USA can be sacrificed to distract from a domestic story repugnant. It’s an example of the navel gazing self centered politics that is somewhat responsible for where we are

The US and Israel are bombing Iran. Anyone reporting it as “preventive” is engaging in propaganda, by definition. There is no interpretation of what’s happening as anything else than a crime. You don’t have to like the Iranian regime to understand why this is bad.

If Reform had won, Labour's statement would be that this result is a stark reminder we need to listen and learn from voters who rightly feel betrayed by modern politics. But the Greens won by a comfortable margin, so it's: these voters are stupid and also sinister and, ugh, Muslims

Unbelievable article with totally misleading headline. Head of BBC News says she gave Farage more airtime than he was entitled to. She was pro-Reform. Journalists in the newsroom opposed giving him extra unwarranted exposure. This is described as being anti-Reform.

The UK Labour govt pushed out this false propaganda today as they are in a bye-election & struggling. It’s a sign of how Trumpian/authoritarian the govt has become that it’s making stuff up about a very serious crime, date rape. The dogwhistle ‘protect women & girls’ is to appeal to the far right*

Because of the National driver register, since their licenses are suspended, trans folks cannot move to another state and get a new license until they remove the suspension on their existing Kansas license. They can't even escape this by moving to another state.

CW: transphobia. See, this is why it can be painful to know too much history.🫤 This post implies that what is happening in Kansas is *similar* to what the nazis did. But it's not just similar. It's *identical*. In 1933, nazis revoked trans people's documents. Before 1938. Paragraph 175 and 183.
