Autistic people making jokes about THEIR OWN autism/autistic experiences isn't making light of or making fun of autism It's often done to help spread awareness. It can also be a coping mechanism. It can also be so other autistics who relate can have a laugh and feel less alone

Just because it’s all you’ve ever known doesn’t mean it’s good for you

I don't go by someone's block lists. Or someone else's recommendation of who to block. I also never recommend on who to block. I go by my own experiences and who I see someone else interact with someone else, even if I ain't personally interacted with you, you could still be blocked. Move on.

I don’t agree with the popular claim ‘you can’t be a little autistic’, because I’m not even sure autism exists other than as a top-down, diagnostic tool. Given autism is a syndrome, its component parts are so varied and variable, the idea we can drop them in a box and slap a label on it, seems lazy.

I’m more often reading how the double empathy problem (DEP) is a better explanation for communication difficulties than theory of mind (ToM). I can see how this could be seductive - DEP is not deficit focused so easier to ‘accept’ within the community. But there’s a problem…

So about ten years ago I found a small network of bots on Reddit dedicated to spreading hate. The thing about it is that these weren't even responding to political topics - they were just responding to random keywords with insults and hate. The same bots are now here. You should understand why. 🧵

Thinking back to my father who I suspect was #autistic but never knew. He had a small shop, dealing with customers all day. He used the same 'set' of expressions and phrases that he would mix and match for different situations. No one else talked like that. Makes total sense now.

You can’t tell if someone is disabled by how they look or speak. Invisible disabilities are just as real—and just as deserving of respect and support.

There’s something wrong with our understanding of neurodivergence. Call me a pedantic pattern picker, but it doesn’t add up. As if we are confusing what it is with what that can do to us in the presence of stressors. Just one example is the overlap between the ‘symptoms’ of adhd and trauma.

Are we ready to have this convo here, or should I write something longer-form about this another time? Neurodivergent people can cause harm to other neurodivergent ppl & to neurotypical ppl. My personal theory is that this is usually a trauma response due to abuse suffered for being ND. 1/4

I’ve been thinking about my immediate and very large extended family on both sides. It’s like a neurodivergent family group on steroids. Apart from some of the distant younger cousins (medically dx’d as autistic), none of them realise!

As an autistic, categorising things / ideas made sense to me, until it didn’t. Placing things in mental boxes, limited my ability to identify patterns or correlations. N.B. very different from causations. Leaving it messy but tagging attributes / themes makes much more sense. #autistic

The more I try to understand masking, the more I suspect it has at its root the need to form deep bonds and connection. It’s not just an attempt to ‘fit in’. It’s a desperate but maladaptive attempt to love and be loved. #autistic #masking
