As you could probably tell by my profile pic, I love the moth urchin fungus (Akanthomyces aculeatus). This fungus modifies the behavior of its moth host before exploding from its cadaver postmortem 👀! Found this one today along a hemlock lined creek!

Look, even fungi have problems if they are given too much alcohol! This is growth after one week on Malt Yeast Extract Agar. Top row - 0% ethanol, middle row - 5% ethanol, and bottom row - 10% ethanol.

In only a few short months, it will be springbeauty rust season here in the north central Appalachian 🥳! This disease is caused by Puccinia mariae-wilsoniae, an obligate fungal parasite of Carolina springbeauty (Claytonia caroliniana)!
