Spotted some tiny but beautiful carnivorous plants today in a bog in Bangor, Maine! Not sure if this is the Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) or the Spoonleaf Sundew (Drosera intermedia)? I would love to hear what others more well versed on this genus think.

Look, even fungi have problems if they are given too much alcohol! This is growth after one week on Malt Yeast Extract Agar. Top row - 0% ethanol, middle row - 5% ethanol, and bottom row - 10% ethanol.

Itβs hard to believe these aptly named rhizomorphs are not actual plant roots! What you are actually seeing are the melanized hyphae of the fungus Armillaria gallica growing in pure culture on an inoculated petri plate!

Most of last year was about The Book, but I did lots more science writing, too! Here's a π§΅of a few of my favorite stories, one for each month of 2025. The first is about geochemists solving a centuries old "cold case," identifying the volcano that erupted in 1831 and cooled the planet π§ͺ
