Autistic life is wondering when this festive social time of year is over with for another year so you can just spend time on your own and not be overstimulated.

Being autistic to me means doing the social thing over the Christmas period to than get home and want to be in bed for the next day at least to recharge my batteries. Not everyone can recover by getting up and doing the next day just so easily. I get extremely drained and ideally I need to rest.

To all the lovely autistic humans all over the world that find Christmas Day difficult, please take care.

Shout out to all the wonderful autistic humans that on Christmas day are saying they're going to the toliet, when really they just want to hide in the bathroom to cope with the overstimulation.

Not being told a time for something is far from ideal for an autistic person like me. I need structure, I need to know what's happening so I can try to mentally prepare.

Autistic me is getting ready for the next few days or so. I'm constantly checking my notes and editing my notes. I never seem to be happy with them, that's wrong I must change that for the 20th time. Christmas time for many humans is totally exhausting. Please make time for yourself.

Do I have to go out ?! Do I have to go out for a meal later surrounded by random people and noise that really I don't want.. Do I have to exchange gifts for tomorrow ?

It's the time of the year for autistic me to get worn out over Christmas. Give gifts and receive gifts when I have no interest in doing so. Which then makes me look like I don't care and ungrateful. Why can't we all just gather around and forget the gift thing and just talk about our interests?!

I have had the same meal 4 days in a row, I will eat something else tomorrow. The next day is here.. autistic me.. hmmm I will eat something else tomorrow.

The idea that autistic people lack empathy is still depressingly prevalent, partly because people conflate 'caring about other humans' wellbeing & wanting them to be happy' with 'reliably able to infer a stranger's motivation & emotional state based off observing a few external nonverbal clues'.

If you have autistic relatives for the love of GOD don’t invite them to a family only thing and then drop extra guests on them and make THEM feel like an asshole if they don’t want to come anymore. You’ve fundamentally changed the thing you’ve invited them to.

Somebody just said to me, what's the crack. I start looking around puzzled to see if I can see but I don't see a crack. Turns out the person was just asking how I am. I'm ok, I would be even better if you said that instead. Being autistic means I'm going to struggle understanding those phrases.

Autistic life for many at this time of year is spending time at parties/events when you don't want to go, but are expected to. You go but spend hours just sitting in a corner waiting for it to be over, for you to then eventually go home exhausted. The trade off with this doesn't seem worth it to me.

Autistic me is here wondering why people don't say what they mean and instead just use throw away comments because it sounds good. It would make it so much easier for not just me but for many others if you say what you mean.

Trying to explain how difficult it is communicating with unfamiliar people. I'm usually too confused to respond properly because I haven't picked up on their specific patterns yet. Annnd yet... When I tell people it's not from social anxiety they look at me like I'm crazy.

Oh you're autistic, your life must be fun" Me: having to do things and by thing I mean pretty much everything in a certain way and order otherwise don't bother trying to contact me for at least a week, so yeah fun.

So you're sat here with chores to do round the house but your autistic brain just ain't functioning like it was yesterday. Your brain just ain't having any of it today, what should I be doing, nope I can't do that today. I can't even remember how to do that anyway. Recharge and try again tomorrow.

I don't go by the whole low support needs thing, partly to do with when I read things like this. Another reason we don't all fit in the same basket.

One of the most disheartening things about being autistic is when you're talking about your special interest to someone and they leave or make an excuse to leave. You ain't finished telling them, it makes you feel like crap. Please can the person take an interest at least till you have finished.

Autistic life for me is I will make a joke, no one will laugh, a few seconds or so later someone else says the same thing and every body laughs. It's less about "what" I said, and much more about how they feel about me.

There’s an excessive amount of stress associated with maintaining a false narrative. You don't even need to be autistic to see this. It’s just far easier to tell the truth. Even when there are negative consequences, the stress of lying far outweighs the stress of justified consequences.

I have just got back home after spending the last two and a half hours of sitting in a random field surrounded be nature and peace. Being autistic means sometimes I struggle to cope with my surroundings. I will sit in a field with very little around me. It's really nice.

I find it funny when autistic me knows a lot about something and then someone who knows nothing about it tells me that I'm wrong. It's like they're testing me, because it's like they're insulting my intelligence while also showing their lack of knowledge. There are so many kinds of intelligence.

Being autistic and not remembering who you are but I certainly remember your dogs name, how old your old your dog is, when you got your dog etc etc. Many autistics feel more at peace with animals than humans.

Many of us that are autistic also love playing video games. Games tend to be a lot more predictable than the outside world. They can be social, but also solo. Even the solo ones have communities built around them so people engage in if they choose to do so. Along with sense of accomplishment.

Being a mad person is so different from being an autistic person, but some people are both, & none of us are close to neurotypical, but being under the same umbrella as nuerodivergent (once applied mostly to autistic people) requires us to still note our distinctions. It's a really big umbrella.

I wrote “playing with his Legos” in an upcoming article because I was being cute. Showed it to two autistic friends who are men. Both of them were like “you absolutely cannot say Legos, you’ll get crucified”

Just had a doctor interrogate the autism diagnosis on my records due to the ‘high levels of emotional empathy’ observed during our consultation. He then suggested that being a writer and autistic was, in his mind, highly unlikely. Sorry, lads…but am I in the wrong century?

When I was a child and having meltdowns I would simply run away or hide to help me. I didn't really know where I was going or what I was doing. Now as an autistic adult ? I will go sit in a field surrounded be nature to gather my thoughts and to recharge. I know where I'm going and what I'm doing.
