whose trauma is intelligible as trauma? PDs AND trauma as psychological concepts BOTH are ways to determine “worthy” subjects, one just happens to be comparatively more encompassing.

my goal of PD advocacy is not redemption or to become “worthy” subjects. it’s to abolish the ways in which we determine worthy subjects, including the kind of intelligibility screen that “trauma, not PD” generates.

“trauma, not PD” at its core is a non-intersectional movement.

who will be redeemed by our movement from PD to trauma? and who will be left behind in the social death of the PD category? those who experience social death in more than one way.

when we say “trauma, not PD,” we identify with subjects who are permissible within a category achieving emancipation through notions of the redeemable human subject (an implicitly white subject because histories of social death position the Black subject against the free subject of liberal politics)

Black and brown people are more likely to be diagnosed with personality disorders, pathologized with the more stigmatized mental disorders because their madness is viewed through white supremacy, orientalism, and anti-Blackness and thus is overdetermined with “danger.”

white Mad people are cared for and mourned—given access to the benefits of the therapeutic state. while Black and brown Mad people are targets of the state.

white Mad people are viewed as merely sympathetic victims of their bodyminds whereas Black and brown Mad people are turned monsters and enemies to sane white society.

white Mad people are more likely to have their madness treated as a therapeutic medical problem while Black and brown people’s madness is more likely to be treated as criminality or danger.

borderline is generally caused by child abuse by parents and caregivers. 70% of borderlines have experienced some form of child sexual abuse. borderlines have a 20 year reduced life expectancy due to suicide and chronic stress-induced physical health issues. 10% of borderlines die by suicide.

i don’t need to say how people diagnosed with personality disorders are socially creative to justify their liberation—they might indeed be socially destructive. they might not directly create better social forms. but destruction throws us into a vacuum in which we have to improvise new social forms
