i’m reading “Writing Mad Lives in the Age of the Asylum” by Michael Rembis. the american public’s political consciousness sided with former asylum inmates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in large part because of advocacy by the former inmates. 1/2

what if personality disorders aren’t monstrosities? what if they were instead the deeply vulnerable experiences of living beings as they are crushed in the vise of power? wouldn’t you also wail if you were crushed? would you expect others to treat your screams with disdain or gingerly open the vise?

historically, sanity supplanted God in western society. reason took the place of the divine. it assumed the same social function as God did in premodern europe. sanity is an euro-american construct that colonizes the world and subjugates all those who deviate from the western ideal as “irrational.”

sanity as a political order and practice materialized through the history of colonization. materially and historically, sanity was inserted into social life through the activities of colonialism. below is a paragraph from the new special issue on Mad Methods in Disability Studies Quarterly.

someone needs to do a history of sanity by tracing its origins and progression through the history of colonization.

if we are to talk about the actual concrete practices through which sanity is deployed, we are talking about the social, cultural, political practices of coloniality.

why do we blame people diagnosed with personality disorders? is it ethical?

my heart breaks for the wonderful, beautiful & lovely people i haven’t met yet or won’t ever at all. my heart breaks i won’t get the chance to love & care for them. my heart breaks i won’t know many lovely people out there in the world. but i take comfort in the fact their existence parallels mine.

we can’t pass through this world without being guilty in the suffering of another. perhaps it provides the demanding impetus to battle for a world in which needs are not met through the disavowal of another, but supported through mutual recognition that all vulnerabilities are merely reflections.
