A huge part of my childhood was spent playing Atari and Activision games on the 2600, as well as games by Konami and Spanish studios on the MSX, with some Brazilian games here and there. The "crash" never really "happened" in my country, and Nintendo didn't come onto my radar until much later.

I think the wonderful thing about (particularly) the 8 bits machines is they operate on a human scale. Complicated enough to perform magic but simple enough to understand. Big enough to solder. Readable schematics. Logic that operates at a level and speed that's easily interpreted. Happy days.
