While the blizzard was hammering the East Coast, we had the planet's first Category 5 tropical cyclone of 2026 Monday, Cyclone Horacio. Topped out at 160 mph winds and 920 millibar central pressure, based on satellite estimates. Fortunately, it passed well east of Rodrigues Island (Mauritius).

Hurricanes are getting stronger: This study found from 1992-2021, Cat 1+ hurricanes globally intensified by 1.74 m/s (3.9 mph) over the 30-year period, and that a cold bias in IPCC climate models "probably contributes to an underestimate in projections of major hurricane frequency.”

Florida winters often bring spectacular cloud formations when colder pockets of air high in the atmosphere combine with sufficient moisture to produce cirrocumulus and altocumulus clouds.

The Florida dry season continues to exacerbate drought conditions, as the wet season ended on a dry note in September 2024. Since then, many areas have escaped impactful rainfall from the frequent cold fronts and meager moisture associated with the Arctic cold blasts so far this winter.

Beautiful visible satellite this morning shows Florida under a cold, dry continental air mass, with well-defined cold-air stratocumulus cloud streets over the Gulf and Atlantic driven by low-level instability and boundary-layer roll convection.

It’s a frigid 31 degrees at observation time at my coop site in Lake Worth Florida with windchills around 20 degrees. We broke the all time low record temperature of 36 degrees for February 1 set back nearly 100 years ago in 1909. 🥶 #FLwx

00Z HRRR forecasted flat ice accumulations are downright scary. Maximum ice corridor from TX to TN and another maximum in N GA through S Appalachia look to be areas that will see the worst of it with extensive tree & power grid damage. These areas also tend to have high socioeconomic vulnerability.

Using daily minimum temperature data from my site Lake Worth has recorded 5 mornings with lows in the 40–49°F range since 1/1/26. For context, climatological January minimums in coastal PBC average in the mid-50s, making this a notably cool early-to-mid January period, though not record-setting.

Here's a 2025 update to a plot I made last year for the @miamiresilience.bsky.social. This is a dramatic trend in summertime ocean temperatures around south Florida. Not only does this have an impact on marine life, it also affects the weather (heat & humidity) on the Florida peninsula. 🧪🌊

According to HURDAT2 (since 1949 but more reliable since the 1970s), only TWO tropical cyclones have formed between 180° and North America in January. Both Ekeka (1992) and Pali (2016) formed in the central Pacific. If a TC develops near Mexico this month, there is no match in the modern record.

Reminder: Yes, large-scale events that cause at least $1 billion in direct economic impacts drive the bulk of annual US catastrophe losses. But the non-billion-dollar events still drive considerable aggregate costs. Since 2010, non-billion-dollar events account for 24% of US losses ($544 billion).
