September 22-24, 2009: A substantial dust storm swept across the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. The storm was over 600 miles long and completely engulfed some of Australia's largest cities. It was NSW's worst dust storm in nearly 70 years.

September 23, 2020: Hurricane Teddy made landfall in Nova Scotia as a powerful extratropical cyclone. The storm dropped up to 5.2" of rain, produced wind gusts as high as 82 mph, and cut power to ~20,000 customers in the province.

September 22, 2001: A massive tornado struck near Edgar, Nebraska. The F3 was on the ground for around 30 minutes, tracking for 10 miles and reaching a width of 1,250 yards. Fourteen irrigation pivots, 15 grain bins, and two farmsteads were damaged or destroyed.

September 22, 1948: A Category 4 hurricane made landfall in southwest Florida. The day prior, the storm had wrecked the Keys archipelago as a Category 3. Throughout the state, ~1200 structures were damaged/destroyed, 3 people were killed, and several dozen were hurt.

September 22nd, 1989: At midnight, Hurricane Hugo made landfall in South Carolina as a Category 4. At the time, Hugo was the strongest US hurricane since Camille in 1969. In SC, over 21,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and 35 people were killed (direct/indirect). 1/2

Today is the 87th anniversary of one of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history. A similar storm today could prove catastrophic for New England.

September 21-22, 1894: An outbreak of (at least) 8 tornadoes impacted Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. A family of devastating long-track violent tornadoes in northern Iowa (including an estimated F5) was responsible for most of the outbreak's destruction. 63 people were killed, and >240 were hurt.

September 21st, 1924: Northern Wisconsin was struck by a localized outbreak of six significant tornadoes. A long-track F4, which was likely a tornado family, produced probable F5 damage near Thorp as it swept away numerous farms. 34 people were killed, and 115 were hurt.

September 20th, 2017: Hurricane Maria made a devastating landfall on Puerto Rico. Thousands of structures were destroyed, forests were shredded, and communications & power infrastructure were obliterated. Maria took the lives of at least 2,900 people on the island.

Visited the ASU Art Museum in Tempe today; they have a powerful piece by American artist Michelangelo Lovelace called “Katrina Aftermath”.

September 20, 2018: A line of severe thunderstorms produced 29 tornadoes in the Upper Midwest. Two of the twisters were rated EF2, one of which destroyed homes in Morristown and the other flattened structures at an airport near Faribault. One person was injured.

So, I attended a homecoming parade in a small town in South Dakota today. The Senate Majority Leader was within arms length from me. I could have said something to him, but I didn't. His overall reception from the crowd was a cold welcome. 1/n

OTD an outbreak of 7 tornadoes struck the Po Valley, four of them can be rated as IF2.5. Despite towns and villages being directly struck, as well as close calls at the Fossoli di Carpi airfield, incredibly nobody was injured

September 19th, 2017: After decimating Dominica, Hurricane Maria reintensified to Category 5 strength as it continued to the northwest. During the evening, the storm reached its maximum intensity with winds of 150 knots and a minimum central pressure of 908 millibars.

Sept 19th, 1947: A Category 2 hurricane made landfall near the Chandeleur Islands, LA, with wind gusts of 112 mph and a storm surge of 9.8 feet that hit Shell Beach, Lake Borgne. Moisant Airport field was flooded by two feet of water, while Jefferson Parish was flooded to a depth of over 3 feet.

On this date, Sept. 18, in 1906, a typhoon struck Hong Kong and killed over 10,000 people. Researchers think it took a track, similar to what could happen with a storm next week. But I think the 1906 Hong Kong storm was different than shown, and formed suddenly off Hong Kong in the S China Sea.

September 18, 1926: A Category 4 hurricane made landfall south of downtown Miami. The storm devastated southern Florida, with thousands of structures either damaged by surge or shredded by winds over 120-130 mph. At least 350 people (estimates vary) lost their lives.

September 17, 1914: A tropical storm made landfall near the Florida-Georgia state border with estimated sustained winds of 70 mph. While it may seem insignificant, this storm is notable for being the only officially-recognized Atlantic tropical cyclone of 1914.

September 17th, 1923: A raging fire threatens the University of California at Berkeley. The fire began in the dry forest northeast of Berkeley, though the reason behind the start is unknown. Strong northeasterly winds allowed the fire to rapidly grow. Two people were killed in this fire.

September 16th, 2020: Hurricane Sally struck Alabama as a Category 2. The storm was the first hurricane to make landfall in the state since Ivan, exactly 16 years prior. Rainfall rates were immense along the coast, with up to ~30 inches falling in Orange Breach, Alabama.

September 16, 1999: Hurricane Floyd made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 2. The storm, which was one of the largest Atlantic hurricanes on record, brought devastating impacts (mainly flooding) to much of the Eastern Seaboard. Floyd caused 85 fatalities.

September 16th, 1903: The "Vagabond" hurricane made landfall in New Jersey as a Category 1. This storm is the only hurricane on record to make landfall in New Jersey. Impacts in the Mid-Atlantic were significant, coming at a toll of 57 lives.

September 15-17th, 2004: Hurricane Ivan produced 119 tornadoes from Florida to southern PA. This event remains the largest tropical cyclone-related outbreak in US history. The strongest tor was an F3 near Remington, Virginia. 7 people were killed, and 41 were injured.

September 14, 1928: An outbreak of at least seven tornadoes impacted Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Two were estimated to have been intense (F3+), with the strongest being an F4 that devastated Rockford, Illinois. 14 people were killed, and ~115 were injured.

September 15th, 1945: A major hurricane made landfall near Homestead Air Reserve Base in South Florida. The Category 4 hurricane brought wind gusts of nearly 150 mph, which damaged or completely destroyed over 7,000 homes in the state. Four people, including a fire chief, were killed.

Sept 11-15th, 1996: A strong cyclonic storm system developed over Lake Huron. The storm reached its peak on Sept 14th with a central pressure of 992 mbar and sustained winds of 73 mph. The "eye" of this storm measured 20 miles across and was ringed by tall cumulus clouds resembling an eyewall.

September 14-16, 1995: Hurricane Marilyn struck the eastern Caribbean Islands. Guadalupe recorded a near-record-setting rainfall total of 20". The storm ravaged the US Virgin Islands, damaging or destroying 80% of structures on St. Thomas. 13 people were killed.

September 14th, 2018: Hurricane Florence struck North Carolina. The storm had weakened before making landfall, but the Category 1 still brought substantial impacts (mainly from flooding) to the Eastern US. 52 people were killed, and $24 billion in damage was produced.

September 14th, 2021: Hurricane Nicholas made landfall near Sargent Beach, Texas, as a Category 1. The storm produced immense rainfall totals along the Gulf Coast, with totals in some areas eclipsing 10-15". Nicholas caused four fatalities and $1.1 billion in damage.

September 13, 1944: USS Warrington, a Somers-class destroyer, sank east of the Bahamas. The culprit was the Great Atlantic Hurricane, a powerful Category 4 that peaked on the 13th. Nearly 250 members of the ship's crew were lost.

September 13, 1928: Puerto Rico was slammed by a Category 5 hurricane. The storm was reported to have damaged or destroyed over 200,000 structures. Massive amounts of crops were destroyed, heavily damaging the island's export industry. Over 300 people were killed.

September 12, 1988: Hurricane Gilbert struck Jamaica as a Category 3. The island's banana crop was severely damaged, and the overall impact on the country's agricultural sector may have reached $500 million. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged, and ≥45 people were killed.

September 11th, 1992: Hurricane Iniki slammed into the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The storm brought winds of over 130 mph and a 20+ ft surge that damaged or destroyed over 14,000 homes and other structures in the state. Iniki remains the worst hurricane to impact Hawaii.

OTD in 1970, hidden in the darkness, one of Italy's most devastating and tragic tornadoes happened in Veneto. The city of Venice, where the better known worst impacts took place, still remembers it to this day with a memorial dedicated to the victims of that night
