November 10, 1975 4:15-6:00pm: Fitzgerald radios Anderson "I have lost both radars, can you provide me with plots?" "Charlie on that, Fitzgerald." Fitzgerald also cannot find the beacon at Whitefish Point, and calls for any vessels with information. They are told the lighthouse is not operating.

November 10th, 2002: A devastating outbreak of 68 tornadoes impacted numerous states from Mississippi to Pennsylvania. 22 were significant (F2+), the strongest of which was a long-track F4 in Van Wert, OH. 33 people were killed and nearly 300 were injured.

November 9, 1926: A devastating tornado impacted La Plata, Maryland. The F3 took the lives of 17 people and injured over five dozen others. Many of the fatalities occurred at a school that was picked up and thrown into a wooded area. Debris was found more than 30 miles away.

Haiyan also had a lot of eyewall lightning.

November 7-8th, 2013: Typhoon Haiyan peaked at 195 mph, 884 millibar Category 5-equivalent super typhoon. Based on wind speed, it is one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded and one of the strongest landfalling tropical cyclones on record. 1/2

November 7th, 1940: The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed because of the physical phenomenon known as aeroelastic flutter. Before the bridge opened, high winds would cause the bridge to move vertically, giving the nickname Galloping Gertie.

November 7, 2011: An outbreak of 10 tornadoes struck Oklahoma. The strongest was an EF4 (2011's 23rd violent tornado) that leveled an Oklahoma State University research building and mangled nearby trees. A mesonet station was also destroyed. No injuries occurred.

November 5-6th, 2005: A significant outbreak of nine tornadoes impacted five states. Two were intense F3s that struck in Kentucky and Indiana. The more notable of the pair laid waste to areas around Evansville, IN, where 24 people were killed and over 200 were injured.

Nov 4-5th, 1991: Tropical Storm Thelma, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Uring, was one of the deadliest cyclones in Philippine history, killing at least 5,081 people, mainly due to flooding. The cyclone was the 2nd disaster of the year, following the eruption of Mt Pinatubo on June 12th.

November 4th, 2022: An outbreak of 30 tornadoes struck Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. 11 twisters were significant (EF2+). EF4s near Paris and Clarksville, TX, became the state's first violent tornadoes since 2017. Two people were killed and 33 were injured.

November 3, 2001: Hurricane Michelle peaked as a Category 4 with winds of 140 mph. The storm is tied with Lenny (1999) as the Atlantic basin's fourth most intense November hurricane in terms of pressure. A day later, Michelle made landfall in Cuba.

Nov 2-3rd, 1966: An early-season snowfall, which started on the 2nd, whitened the ground from Alabama to Michigan. Mobile, Alabama, had its earliest snowflakes on record. Louisville, KY, measured 13.1 inches; Nashville, Tennessee, reported 7.2 inches; and Huntsville, Alabama, had 4 inches of snow.

November 2, 2018: The deadliest US tornado of 2018 occurred in the Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area when an EF1 with winds of 105 mph collapsed a wall at an Amazon distribution center.

November 2-3rd, 2020: Hurricane Eta rapidly intensified into a high-end Category 4 as it neared Nicaragua. Eta made landfall south of Puerto Cabezas as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 120 mph.

Nov 1st, 1848 Joseph Henry collaborated with US Navy meteorologist James Espy to distribute a circular urging anyone interested in becoming a weather observer "to signify their willingness to do so by a line addressed to the Navy Department" so blank forms could be sent to them for recording data.

November 1st, 2000: A low pressure system spawned five weak tornadoes near Bismarck, North Dakota. The tornadoes caused minor to moderate damage and were distinctive for moving westward, thanks to their proximity to the low. In northwest ND, snow totals reached over 5 inches.

Nov 1st, 1870 United States Army Signal Corps observers at 24 sites around the country simultaneously made weather reports and transmitted them to Washington, where a national weather map would be drawn. This started the process of sending out weather reports by telegraph to metropolitan newspapers.

1. The Oconto tornado hit a Halloween Party at the town hall. There was a hero named Mary Gralheer who called the hall and got them all to safety. One of those "rural America F2s". 2. The storm that went up the Missouri River was such a brilliant lightning producer at sunset.

October 31st, 2000: An outbreak spawned 18 tornadoes in the Central Plains. Three of the tornadoes were significant F2s. Damage was most substantial at Oconto, Nebraska, where one of the F2s damaged or destroyed half of the homes in the town.

Something like this hasn't happened since 1935: a high-end, sub-900mb CAT 5 Tropical Cyclone made landfall at/near peak intensity in the Atlantic Basin. The October 28, 2025 Hurricane Melissa Jamaica landfall event is a rare meteorological moment in history.

October 29-30th, 2011: A nor'easter swept up the Appalachians into New England. Over a foot of snow fell from West Virginia to Maine, with more than two feet in Massachusetts and New Hampshire mountains. Winds over 50 mph were reported on Nantucket Island and Martha's Vineyard.

October 28th, 2020: Hurricane Zeta made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 3. The storm beat the 1921 Tampa hurricane as the latest Category 3+ to strike the US in a calendar year. It was the second major hurricane to impact the state in 2 months.

October 27th, 2020: "The capital of Libya, Tripoli, has been hit by an unprecedented severe supercell storm on Oct 27th, 2020. The storm produced exceptionally large, *giant* hail, possibly more than 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter." www.severe-weather.eu/global-weath...

October 27th, 1913: An outbreak of at least eight tornadoes impacted England and Wales. One tornado caused estimated F3 damage to the Taff Valley towns of Abercynon and Edwardsville, where many houses were unroofed. 1/2

October 26th, 1996: Thunderstorms produced 26 tornadoes; 3 in Nebraska, 9 in northeastern South Dakota, and 14 across west-central and central Minnesota. Five of these were rated F2, and while no fatalities resulted, 15 people were injured.

Only 8 Cat. 4 or 5 hurricanes have tracked within 60 nautical miles of Jamaica in ~175 years of NOAA records. Melissa could be the first to make landfall, there, as a Cat 4 or 5. (Gilbert '88 appeared to have done so as Cat. 3) History in the making, unfortunately.

Hamburg, AR F4 #Tornado – October 26, 1941! An F4 hit around 11:15 PM, cutting a ~10-mile path through south Hamburg. ~53 homes were destroyed; 15 killed, 75 injured. October 26, 1998: Hurricane Mitch became a Category 5 north of Honduras. At its peak, the storm had peak winds of 180 mph and a 905 mbar central pressure. Mitch is tied with 2007's Dean as the ninth-most intense hurricane in the Atlantic basin's recorded history.

October 26th, 2010: A dynamic extratropical cyclone produced a wide array of significant weather events in the central & eastern US. 63 twisters and hundreds of damaging wind reports were spawned by a high risk derecho event & tornado outbreak. In the Upper Midwest, a blizzard occurred. 1/2

October 25th, 1975: Eight days after being launched by NASA, GOES-1 returned its first image of Earth. GOES-1 was the first in NOAA's line of weather observation satellites that are still in use today.

October 25, 2012: Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 with 115 mph winds and a 954 mbar central pressure. More than 226,600 homes were damaged or destroyed, and total losses were estimated at ~$2 billion. 11 people were killed in the island nation.

At 6:30am on October 24, 2005, Category 3 Hurricane #Wilma made its final landfall in southwest Florida with peak winds of 120 mph. The huge eye took just 4 hours to cross the peninsula but its wind and storm surge caused tremendous damage across all of central and southern Florida. #Wilma20 [1/6]

October 23rd, 1947: Fish fell from the sky in Marksville, LA. Thousands of fish fell from the sky in an area 1,000 feet long by 80 feet wide, possibly due to a waterspout. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

October 23rd, 2015: Hurricane Patricia peaked as a Category 5 with winds of 215 mph and an 872 mb pressure in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the NHC's area of responsibility and across the Western Hemisphere. 1/2

October 23rd, 1920: Dr. Ted Fujita was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Fujita devoted his life to studying tornadoes, supercells, and downbursts. He is best known as the creator of the scale the National Weather Service uses to rate tornadoes.

October 22, 1998: A tropical depression located in the Caribbean Sea south of Jamaica attained tropical storm intensity and was given the name "Mitch". The storm would go on to become one of the Atlantic basin's deadliest hurricanes when it ravaged Central America.

October 22, 2012: Tropical Depression Eighteen, located south of Jamaica, was upgraded to a tropical storm and given the name "Sandy". A week later, the storm would cause widespread destruction totaling over $65 billion in the Northeast as a post-tropical cyclone.

October 21st, 1934: A severe windstorm lashed the northern Pacific coast. In Washington state, the storm claimed the lives of 22 people. Winds gusting to 87 mph at North Head, WA, produced waves twenty feet high on Puget Sound.

October 21-22, 2005: After weakening to Category 4 intensity, Hurricane Wilma made a potent landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula. The storm caused major disruptions to the area's tourism industry. 8 people were killed and >$4 billion in damage was produced in Mexico.

October 21st, 1966: An avalanche of mud and rocks buries a school in Aberfan, Wales, killing 144 people, mostly young students. The elementary school was in a valley below a mining operation dumping site. In the days leading up to October 21st, there was heavy rain. 1/2

October 20-21st, 2019: Nearly three dozen tornadoes impacted six states spanning from Texas to Tennessee. Three were significant (EF2+), the strongest of which was an EF3 that caused over $1.5 billion in damage in the Dallas metro. Luckily, only three people were injured.

October 20, 2015: Tropical Depression Twenty-E, located off the coast of southern Mexico, was upgraded to a tropical storm and given the name "Patricia". Within the span of two days, Patricia would undergo extremely rapid intensification into a Category 5 monster.

October 19, 2005: Hurricane Wilma peaked as a Category 5 in the western Caribbean Sea. The storm's central pressure bottomed-out at 882 millibars, making it the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Ocean. Wilma took only a day to go from 70 to 175 mph.
