December 26th, 2015: An outbreak of thirteen tornadoes struck the Southern Plains. The strongest twister was an EF4 that devastated parts of Garland and Rowlett, Texas. Nine of the 13 fatalities occurred in vehicles thrown from a highway bridge.

Dec 24th, 2004: An extremely rare snowstorm impacts southeastern Texas. Corpus Christi International Airport officially measured 4.4 inches from this event. This was their second white Christmas ever recorded in Corpus Christi. The other white Christmas occurred in 1918 when 0.1 inches was reported.

December 23rd, 2015: A substantial outbreak of 31 tornadoes impacted numerous states in the Southeast and Midwest. Seven were significant (EF2+). The strongest tornado was a long-lived EF4 that devastated areas near Holly Springs and Ashland, Mississippi. 13 people were killed.

December 21st, 2013: A widespread severe weather event impacted numerous states, from Texas to Pennsylvania. The SPC received over 300 wind reports, several of which were >65 kts. Fifteen tornadoes were confirmed, 3 of which were rated EF2. Four people were killed.

It all started in 1955 with a misprint in a Colorado newspaper and a call to Col. Harry Shoup's secret military hotline. Shoup played along with the tiny voice who called, and a tradition was born. From the NPR archives.

Dec 20th, 1836: A "sudden freeze" occurred in central Illinois. Around noon, a cold front with 70 mph winds swept through, dropping the temperature from 40 to near zero in a matter of minutes. Many settlers froze to death. Folklore told of chickens freezing in their tracks and men frozen to saddles.

December 18-21st, 2009: A significant winter storm impacted the Eastern US. Totals in some areas eclipsed two feet, and widespread accumulation of 10-20" occurred elsewhere. Tens of thousands of customers were left without power, and seven people were killed.

December 16, 2000: An outbreak of 24 tornadoes impacted the Southeast. 11 twisters were significant (F2+). 250 homes were damaged or destroyed by an F3 tornado in Etowah County, AL. An F4 struck the southern edge of Tuscaloosa. Twelve people were killed, and 194 were hurt.

December 14-15th, 2015: Typhoon Nona (Typhoon Melor) made its first landfall on Batag Island in Northern Samar and a second landfall in Sorsogon in the Philippines. Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro was the worst hit, with 15,000 homes destroyed, 24,000 families (108,000 people) in evacuation centers.

December 14th, 2010: A rare EF2 tornado went through Aumsville, Oregon, at 11:30 am. The tornado damaged 50 buildings.

December 13, 1973: Nine tornadoes impacted Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Officially, eight were significant (F2+), the strongest of which was an F4 in Greenwood County, SC. Tornado researcher Thomas Grazulis documents 7 strong tornadoes, none above F3. Three people were killed.

December 13th, 1967: Light snow fell in southern California, including a trace reported in San Deigo. Higher amounts occurred in Escondido.

December 13, 1984: An intense morning tornado slammed the eastern Dallas metro. The F3 moved northward along a 10-mile path through Balch Springs and Mesquite. It damaged or destroyed around 600 homes, several businesses, and a few churches. 28 people were injured.

December 12th, 1969: A waterspout over Puget Sound made landfall in King County, Washington (south of Seattle). Officially rated F3, the tornado produced significant damage to numerous homes and businesses. At least one person was injured.

December 11th, 2008 Over 6 inches of snow fell in southern Mississippi and southeast Louisiana. Most of the snow was confined to the northern portions of the area, but even New Orleans saw an inch of snow that day.

December 11th, 1990: A devastating tornado struck the city of Mobara in Japan's Chiba Prefecture. The Japanese Meteorological Agency lists this event as an F3, while Dr. Fujita rated it as an F4. Over 1000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and one person was killed.

December 8th, 2002: Typhoon Pongsona struck Guam as a Category 4-equivalent super typhoon. The storm was one of the strongest tropical cyclones in the island's history. Winds over 150 mph damaged or destroyed nearly 8000 homes. One indirect fatality occurred.

December 7th, 2006: A rare tornado tore through Kensal Rise in London. This T4 on the TORRO scale, equivalent to an F2 on the Fujita scale, injured 6 people and damaged 150 homes. According to the BBC, the last tornado to cause significant damage in London was in December 1954 in west London.

December 6th, 1983: One of southeast Louisiana's worst tornadoes devastated residential areas in Laplace. Over 125 homes in two subdivisions were damaged or destroyed (some swept away). An F5 rating was not applied due to poor wall anchoring. 25 people were injured.

Mom and Dad had just picked up keys on the 1st. After a nervous return to the area they found their house was spared. Married 7 days later.

December 5th, 1975: An intense tornado struck Tulsa, Oklahoma. The F3 damaged or completely destroyed over 160 houses, 81 apartments, several businesses, and forty aircraft. 38 people were injured along a 1.5-mile long track.

December 5-9th, 1952: A dense layer of smog settled over London and became so thick by December 7th that virtually no sunlight was seen. Conservative estimates place the death toll at 4,000, with some estimating the smog killed as many as 12,000 people. #wxhistory

December 5, 1953: A violent tornado devastated Vicksburg, Mississippi. The F5 (rating is disputed) damaged/destroyed several hundred homes, businesses, and industrial structures. 38 people were killed, making this event one of the deadliest tornadoes in MS history.

December 3rd, 1978: A violent nighttime tornado tore through the Shreveport, Louisiana, metropolitan area. The F4 devastated Bossier City, as 75 homes & 51 businesses were destroyed (along with hundreds of structures damaged). 2 people were killed, and 266 were injured.

December 2, 2018: An intense tornado struck the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia. The large EF3 threw vehicles and trailers, downed power poles, and blew over many trees on a nearby island. A boat anemometer measured a 144 mph gust. Four people were injured.

December 1st, 1896: Chinook winds caused the temperature at Kipp (Browning), Montana, to warm from -3 degrees to 34 degrees in 7 minutes. The snow depth lowered from 28 inches on December 1st to 11 inches on December 2nd.

November 30th, 2005: Tropical Storm Epsilon became the 26th named storm of one of the busiest hurricane seasons on record. Epsilon threatened Bermuda with dangerous surf.

November 29-30th, 2010: An outbreak of 32 tornadoes impacted the Southeast and Midwest. Six of the tornadoes in Louisiana and Mississippi were significant (EF2+). An EF4 (the 13th of the year in the US) leveled several homes near Atlanta, LA. 32 people were injured.

November 29-30, 2022: An outbreak of 25 tornadoes struck the Southeastern US. Seven tornadoes were significant (EF2+),the strongest of which were intense EF3s near Clarks, Louisiana, and Fruitdale, Alabama. Two people were killed by an EF2 north of Montgomery, AL.

November 27th, 1701: Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, physicist, and mathematician, was born on this day. He founded the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory in 1741 and, in 1742, proposed the Celsius temperature scale, which bears his name.

November 27-28th, 1912: Snow fell from Mississippi to North Carolina. The storm produced a white Thanksgiving (Nov 28) in Atlanta, Georgia, and flurries fell in northern Florida.

November 27-28th, 2005: The fourth major outbreak of November 2005 in the US struck KS, MO, and AR. Training supercells north/west of Little Rock produced multiple damaging SigTors (F2+), while a cold-core event dropped many weak tors west of Topeka. 2 people were killed.

November 26-27th, 1973: An outbreak of 23 tornadoes struck the Southern US. Thirteen tornadoes were significant (F2+), three of which in Mississippi and Alabama were F3s. A weather service office in Huntsville lost its roof. One person was killed and 133 were injured.
