July 20-21st, 2016: A derecho began in North Dakota and moved into the Upper Midwest during the late evening. Wind gusts as high as 103 mph were recorded in the Duluth, MN, area. At least 75,000 customers lost power. Two campers were killed at Basswood Lake in Ontario.

July 19-20, 2019: A powerful derecho tracked from Minnesota to lower Michigan. The line packed wind gusts over 100 mph and spawned seven weak tornadoes. Several counties in northern Wisconsin were hit hard by macrobursts that produced substantial treefall.

July 19, 2023: An intense tornado tore through Nash and Edgecombe counties in eastern North Carolina. Along a 16.5-mile path, the EF3 heavily damaged a Pfizer warehouse, downed a transmission tower, snapped trees, and destroyed several homes. 16 people were injured.

July 18th, 2005: Hurricane Emily made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 4 with winds of 135 mph. Hundreds of structures were damaged/destroyed with the tourism industry notably being hit hard. Thousands of acres of forest and farmland were also affected.

July 18th, 2021: The Bootleg Fire was triggered by lightning near Beatty, Oregon, on July 6, 2021. Twelve days later, a powerful pyro-tornado formed on the southeast side of the inferno. The vortex snapped or uprooted numerous trees and scoured an asphalt road.

July 18th, 1986: A widely viewed tornado struck the Minneapolis/St Paul metro. Described as a "minimal" F2, the twister was observed by MNDOT cameras, a KARE-11 news helicopter, and tens of thousands of residents. Several dozen structures were damaged.

July 17th, 1987: Slow-moving thunderstorms caused flooding in the Guadalupe River in Texas. A bus and van leaving a youth summer camp stalled near the rapidly rising river. The powerful surge of water swept away 43 people, mostly teenagers. 10 drowned in the floodwaters.

July 16th, 1979: A destructive F3 struck Cheyenne, Wyoming. The tornado, which was originally rated F4, damaged or destroyed hundreds of houses, mobile homes, businesses, and other structures in the city. One person was killed, and 40 others were injured.

July 15th, 2024: A derecho tore through the Midwest. The squall line produced widespread damaging wind gusts up to 105 mph, bringing down countless trees and knocking out power from Iowa to Ohio. 57 tornadoes were confirmed, including 32 in the NWS Chicago forecast area.

July 12-14, 1992: Over the span of three days, Ohio experienced over three dozen tornadoes. The total of 29 twisters on the 12th still stands as the state's highest single-day tornado count. Thirteen were confirmed as strong F2s and F3s. 36 people were injured.

July 11-12, 2017: A two-day outbreak of eighteen tornadoes affected several Central US states. Three tornadoes along the North Dakota-Minnesota border produced significant damage near Buxton, Hillsboro, and Ulen, garnering EF2 ratings.

July 11th, 1996: A stunning tornado impacted St-Stanislas, Québec. The winding funnel, which was rated F1, tore roofs off several homes, uprooted trees, and leveled a barn. No injuries were reported.

July 10, 1989: A potent outbreak of 17 tornadoes struck the Northeast. Two of the twisters were rated F4, striking west of Albany, NY, and in New Haven, CT. The storms also brought wind gusts over 80 mph and >2" hail. 150+ people were injured and 1 person was killed.

July 10, 1994: A violent tornado struck near Birtle, Manitoba. The twister, which did not receive major media coverage due to its lack of population impact, was rated F4. Two people were hurt and a pair of farmsteads were heavily damaged along an ~18.1 mile path.

July 10, 1913: The temperature at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley, California reached 134° F. While some uncertainty exists about its validity, this measurement is recognized by the World Meteorological Organization as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

July 10th, 1926: At the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, lightning struck one of the explosives storage structures during a thunderstorm and started a fire. As a result, thousands of tons of munitions detonated. At least 21 people were killed, and dozens were injured.

July 9th, 1982: Wind shear led to the devastating crash of Pam Am flight 759 soon after takeoff from New Orleans International Airport. There was a heartbreaking loss of 145 lives onboard and eight on the ground.

Also OTD, a severe weather outbreak brought giant hail and three tornadoes including a mountain IF2 in 2021, and in 1875 a tragic intense tornado sunk a boat on the Ticino river in Lombardy drowning 20 people (on a total of 24 deaths)

OTD in 2015, Italy's most recent violent tornado. A terrible IF4 that split the difference between the Veneto towns of Dolo and Mira while scouring the ground, mangling cars, debarking trees and (partially) destroying buildings. 72 people were injured, one was killed after getting lofted in his car

July 7th, 1984: Between 10:25 and 10:45 CST, a microburst descended from a severe thunderstorm over the Tennessee River south of Huntsville, Alabama. The microburst's winds struck a 90 ft paddle boat broadside, capsizing it. 11 out of the 18 people aboard were killed.

July 7, 1915: A severe wind and thunderstorm event caused heavy damage and 38 deaths in Cincinnati, Ohio. Many older buildings were demolished and the steamship "Dick Fulton" was overturned. This event was originally believed to have been a tornado.

July 6th, 2022: A high-end EF2 plowed through Goshen, Ohio. The tornado, which struck with winds of 130 mph, damaged at least 150 buildings in the town. Among the structures impacted were a fire station, two schools, and numerous homes. Three people were injured.

July 4-6, 1999 #PAwxHistory Excessive heat is attributed to killing 76 people. Temperatures did not drop below the mid 70s for much of the state on the 4th.

July 5, 2022: A powerful derecho roared across the Central Plains and Midwest regions. The line impacted some areas still dealing with the aftermath of the May 12 derecho. Numerous wind gusts of 70-80+ were reported, including a 99 mph measurement near Howard, SD.

July 4-5th, 1999: The Boundary Waters/Canadian Derecho traveled over 1300 miles from North Dakota to Maine over the span of 22 hours. Massive forest blowdowns occurred in Minnesota and southern Canada, flattening thousands of trees. Four people were killed by the MCS.

July 4th, 1969: The "Ohio Fireworks" derecho struck the Lower Great Lakes region. Several tornadoes and powerful winds as high as 104 mph were produced by the squall line. At least 40 people, many being boaters on Lake Erie, were killed, and dozens more were injured.

OTD in 1965, one of Italy's worst severe weather days ever. Four strong to violent tornadoes caused massive damage from SE Piedmont to eastern Emilia-Romagna, causing 15 deaths and at least 244 additional injuries while destroying homes and vegetation and throwing cars from roads into fields

July 3, 1907: Four intense tornadoes slammed Wisconsin. Three were estimated to have been violent F4s, some of which may have been complex tornado families. The town of Neillsville was wrecked with almost two dozen homes destroyed. At least 14 people were killed.

July 3, 2014: Hurricane Arthur made landfall around 11:15 PM EDT near Cape Lookout, NC as a Category 2. The storm was the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Sandy (2012). It produced moderate damage in the Carolinas & Mid-Atlantic. Damage costs reached ~$10 million.

July 2nd, 1982: A Los Angeles man, Larry Walters, took off from his backyard in a lawn chair attached to 42 Army surplus weather balloons. Lawnchair Larry ascended to 16,000 feet and descended by shooting out the balloons with a pellet gun. He was fined by the FAA.

July 1st, 1792: A severe storm impacted New York and surrounding areas in the Northeast. The event, described in newspapers as a "tornado" or "hurricane," was likely a significant squall line. Thirty people were killed when their boats capsized.

June 30 - July 1st, 2014: A "one-two punch" derecho event impacted much of the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. The most continuous and intense damage occurred over eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, and northern Indiana, where some locations were affected by both storm systems.

June 28th, 1865: One of the earliest-recorded tornadoes in Wisconsin struck Viroqua. Witnesses reported that the vortex had "branches" and "eddies", indicative of a multivortex structure. Much of the community was flattened, and at least 17 people were killed.

June 28, 2025: Fourteen tornadoes struck the Northern Plains and Midwest. Three of the twisters were significant (EF2+), the strongest of which was a shape-shifting EF3 that debarked trees, left cycloidal scouring marks, and leveled a house. Four people were injured.

June 27, 1951: An incredibly brief F4 devastated part of WaKeeney, Kansas. Per Grazulis, this twister was embedded in a large area of downburst activity. The vortex's path was less than a mile, but over 100 homes were damaged/destroyed and 5 people were killed.
