Stable gravity wave clouds are on full display south of the Florida Big Bend today, evident as rippled, layered bands on visible satellite imagery over Gulf waters chilled into the 50s.

Heat Miser 🥵 will be in control on Saturday before his brother, Cold Miser 🥶, rides into Florida behind a cold front that will push through Tampa on Sunday. Temperatures will start to fall Sunday afternoon and remain cool into Wednesday before the warmth returns on Thursday!

📡🤓Fascinating Science! 📡🧐 Behind Sunday’s cold front, lingering clouds stretch across Florida this morning, but the Gulf tells an even richer story. 📖 The visible satellite image from 9:11 AM ET this Monday morning shows clouds arcing over a warm eddy within the Loop Current west of Tampa Bay.

Guess where the heaviest rainfall has been over the past several hours? Our friends in Levy and Citrus counties have been the winners of heaviest rainfall today. As expected, the cold front is losing steam, however a few showers will move over Tampa Bay region from the Gulf over the next few hours.

Florida winters often bring spectacular cloud formations when colder pockets of air high in the atmosphere combine with sufficient moisture to produce cirrocumulus and altocumulus clouds.

The Florida dry season continues to exacerbate drought conditions, as the wet season ended on a dry note in September 2024. Since then, many areas have escaped impactful rainfall from the frequent cold fronts and meager moisture associated with the Arctic cold blasts so far this winter.

When the #Florida peak of the climatological wet season (roughly July through September) last year ended with a drier than normal September in 2025 (due to a persistent U.S. east coast trough and lack of tropical cyclone activity in Florida)…

It was 49 years ago today on January 18, 1977. I was a little kid in Connecticut at the time … a year before the historic New England Blizzard of February 1978, but here in Tampa light snow fell with a cold air outbreak. #weather #climate

Flashback to 14 years ago at the Tampa MOSI when I had the pleasure of winning the chocolate eating contest at the annual “Festival of Chocolate” - a contest where a small group of Tampa Bay meteorologists participated to eat dessert under a time limit. The peak wind gust at Tampa International Airport was 42 knots (48 mph) at 11:45 AM ET (1645 UTC), as the cold front barreled through. The wind at 1:00 PM was northwest at 15 mph gusting to 25 mph with a chilly 52 degree temperature. The high temp today was 68 degrees and occurred at 9 AM! 🥶 #flwx
