Let's pretend we had a smart strategy on this, beyond "no data centers ever," what's on the wishlist? - renewable energy generation as part of any new project - incentives for closed loop (not evap) cooling (even if this means increased energy consumption) - battery (not generator) backup

I do think this is a great time to extract concessions from companies building new data centers. You can and should pas laws that say "You must power X% of your datacenter with renewables and add Y% battery or other storage to the grid". They have a lot of money; make them use some!

I now know what gun experts (both sides) hear when well-meaning people use terms like "assault weapons" because I have tasted of data center discourse. 1. It's ok to not like AI 2. We've been making datacenters for decades. It's like 1.5 issues: Power + water. You can fix both by regulations.
