It's certainly a difference I noticed as an American living 10 years in Europe. Even just someone saying "I'm sad today" without alarms going off. A psychologist friend once I thought nailed it, saying sadness isn't really the taboo in the US, its that sadness means failure, and *that's* the taboo.
