I just received the terribly distressing news that Gordon Wood was hit by a car and killed yesterday. We were together with other Founding era scholars at the 2nd Judicial Circuit conference last week at Lake George, and he was as usual in fine fettle and as always enjoyable to talk to.

Iām so sick of this bullshit where a bunch of extraordinarily privileged folks from some of the worldās richest universities, most of whom have never set foot in a state University or community college, arrogate to themselves the right to diagnose what ails academia. Fuck all of them. Seriously.

Reminder ahead of Memorial Day weekend: Swimming in a pool is NOT the same as swimming at a beach with crashing waves, winds, and dangerous currents. You should be a strong swimmer before you go into the ocean. Learning how to swim is the best defense against drowning. More:

I donāt know what to tell you, man. Iām a medieval historian, and, in my field, if you donāt check your sources (and your sourcesā sources) you are just asking to be taken for a ride by some bored 19th C. aristocratic English antiquarian with a penchant for inventing history.

We've reached the point where one party has so obliterated the rule of law that everyone else continuing to abide by it will only hasten the end of our democracy. That's a recipe for chaos and violence. It's terrifying, and I don't know what we do about it.

My annual reminder that in the US (probably others, I just don't know) there is no requirement that your official signature be in cursive. It can be print, uncial, an X , or a pitcure of a bunny whatever you want as long as it is consistent.

I love the fact that there are/have been so many Marvel TV shows that THREE being renewed for a second season is an anomoly worthy of note. Keep in mind that historically only 30% of all television shows get a second season.
