Having kids has made me more anti-car than childless me could have imagined.

Personally, our family does most of our checkups, grocery shopping, kid hauling, and errands by bike and transit. But not every mode of transportation is going to work for every person, for every trip — and that's okay! The point is to give people safe and convenient options for how to get around.

If people on e-bikes followed the same rules as drivers do, we would run red lights, bike the wrong way, stop in the middle of car lanes, drink and bike, text and bike, speed, and block crosswalks…

Also, because cycling can be fun and an e-bike (at my age) makes cycling much easier to do 🙂

People do not buy ebikes because they are happy to spend thousands more than they would on a regular bike. People buy ebikes because they save thousands compared to the car journeys they replace. That is the key distinction that many policy makers the general public miss or don’t understand.

Any time a pedestrian or bicycle route (in this case both) are closed for construction, detours must be of equal or greater protection. The easiest solution in this particular case is to put jersey barriers up protecting the current parking lane for bike/ped travel

The project on the left is completely through environmental review and is approved to move into construction and the project on the right needs more environmental analysis, everything is working great.

Okay, this is worth an actual book. Kind of a what came first, the racism or the justification. Ostensibly, trip generation means higher density housing would cause residential streets to “fail” from a level of service perspective, even though multifamily generates rates at half the rate SFR does.

All deaths of cyclists or pedestrians are tragedies, but I think it feels extra personal when it's someone who's an advocate because it could be any of us. We all know the risks and we all know the inaction that puts us in danger every single day. And yet we still ride.

Had a call this morning where I casually lamented R-3 building code classification in middle housing and retrofits. A building inspector reminded me that it saves lives, for example there was one instance where a kitchen fire posed a danger to a neighbor were it not quickly extinguished.

28 cyclists and 11 cars make their way through an intersection on University Avenue during rush hour on a Thursday, 8:45AM. The moving vehicles (and 3 parked cars) are allotted 3x the space. There are many actors out their not acting in good faith.

Weaponizing environmental concerns to prevent people from living in our urban environments isn’t new. It’s deployed by people with resources to restrict access to high opportunity areas. It’s nimbyism. In order to reach our housing goals, our land use processes must stop enabling this behavior.
