Photo from Seattle's ID, circa 1940's. Look how wide our sidewalks used to be. That same sidewalk is now about half the original width, plus it shares much of it's space with street trees. Ouch. But at least we 2 vehicle lanes running in either direction š„“

Seattle should adopt similar legislation. Imagine mini-towers like this all around Cal Anderson, Volunteer Park, Genesee, Mount Baker Park, Discovery, Magnuson, Interlaken, the Arboretum, etc.

It's really disappointing that just two months ago Katie posted this thread on city-owned grocery stores, and today calls Kroger greedy for closing the Lake City FM (Kroger net profit was 1.4% in 2023). Who would want to open a biz in a city where leaders are calling owners greedy on a 1.4% margin?

If we build enough housing we don't need rent control. We don't get enough housing if we have rent control. We don't get to affordable housing with rent control, if we did SF and NYC would be the most affordable cities in America.

This is such an important part of the conversation surrounding rent freezes. Building maintenance and taxes DO NOT also freeze when rents are frozen. Like most things over time, those costs also increase. Itās impossible to run a building, long-term, on frozen rents.

Mikeās thread, and the recent Mercer Island ruling, proves my theory that cities arenāt qualified to run their own comp planning process. At the very least, the state should significantly reduce a the role cities play in this process.

The left should be shouting from the rooftops for more development - rentals, for sale, mixed-use, etc. This is such an easy source of revenue for cities and weāre completely missing the mark in Seattle.

I grew in CDA and remember the actual KKK marching down Sherman Ave in the 90's, and the Aryan Nations HQ'd in Hayden. This is an incredible turnout for a city of this size (2k+ per the article) and I couldn't be happier to see so much momentum against Trump.

Housing is the only good that people argue against by saying "no one wants that". Imagine telling a company not to make peach-mango salsa because no one wants to buy it. Let people build housing and if no one wants it they lose money.

This is what happens when our cities don't build enough housing. 1400 homes get built in the far exurbs of our cities (in this case Cle Elum) on 800 acres of forest land. Deforestation alone doesn't account for the emissions from vehicles commuting in and out of these homes, either.

You know how I know sprawl doesnāt work? When a city with a median income of $250k and median home value of ~$4m has to cut basic services like their library. CH also has a 70%+ rate of college education or higher.

Cities need to bring back the Commercial Accessory Unit. Just like multi-family housing, we've artificially limited where commercial space can go. The MF housing and Commercial overlay is almost 1:1, and just like MF we've severely under-built commercial retail spaces because of our zoning code.

Let's take bets on how many new duplexes are built in Medina over the next decade. For context, only 52 total sales occurred in the city last year and only ~ 10 were worthy of redevelopment. Maybe we get 10 duplexes over the next decade?

If you are a Democrat, this map represents perhaps the most staggering political failure of our lifetime. People's desire to live in Blue States is reflected in housing prices so why won't the people in charge just allow more homes to be built so we can accommodate that demand?

A group called Tree Action Seattle took their petition to City Hall to save a giant Sequoia. The way they thought most appropriate to convey the need for this tree was by printing out their 2k signatures on this scroll that must be about ~100' long. How many trees were cut down for their scroll?

Farah has always been a gearhead, but his a-ha urbanist moment came while building a parking garage for collectible cars. According to LA zoning rules, he had to add an expensive below-ground level of parking. Farah: āHaving to build a parking lot for your parking lot is dumb as fucking rocks.ā
