Building parking as part of a housing project is expensive – adding up to $20,000 for each space. I signed SB 5184 to establish limits on the number of parking spaces cities and counties require for housing projects, ensuring projects do not have excess parking.

Even weakened through amendments / carve-outs, this is very likely the strongest state parking bill yet in the US, and will enable a lot of new housing in WA state. Terrific work Sen. @jessdbateman.bsky.social, Rep. @davina425.bsky.social, and @citizen-cate.bsky.social and the @sightline.org team!

For-profit developers can & will build most new homes in the US. They can even build a lot of urban infrastructure. But only the public sector has the incentive & ability to *plan* for future land use, physical infrastructure & public services that support communities.
