The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

This is amazing -- a few years ago, Oakland made International Boulevard significantly more deadly when it added bus rapid transit lanes while ignoring best practices (a common problem with US traffic engineers). But after just 5 years of advocacy, local activists got deaths back down to zero.

It's actually *exactly* like this, because Vannevar Bush laid out the modern structure for US research funding after WWII to ensure general R&D capacity—to keep the economy humming, but also in case there was another war, because it had been so hard to get big defense-critical projects spun up.

So if I understand correctly: - We can't install safety measures, bus lanes, or bike lanes on US streets because they'd slow down "working class drivers" en route to work - We can't regulate carmakers to make safe products, because carmakers control regulators - We can't punish violent drivers

We actually, really need to come to grips with the fact that a large faction of the left/progressive movement in the United States is in favor of no penalties for violent crimes, and in particular, the leading cause of violent crime, injury, and death. Too many leftists grew up in the suburbs, IMO
