Fuhrman was a dirty, racist cop. But people can surprise you. In the early 2000s he went to Oklahoma to interview cops and prosecutors for a book celebrating the death penalty. He was so appalled at what he saw that he changed his mind. He wrote a book condemning the death penalty instead.

It would be egregious if this was misguided cost-cutting, but it's not that at all. The Trump admin is not doing this to cut costs (and they've increased federal gov't costs), they are doing to punish academics & scientists, who they perceive as enemies, and to make more funds available for looting.
