🚨 Updated working paper! Ekin Dursun and I ask what instruments best manipulate emotions on surveys (osf.io/56h4g). We find that vignettes really work! They have large effects on emotions of interest & smaller effects on emotions *not* of interest. But as always, it's complicated.👇 (1/17)

Once again, experiments find that people vote for populist parties because of their ideological positions, not pro-people or anti-elite appeals - in spite of *expressing* populist attitudes. Super cool to have worked on this with @fabianneuner.bsky.social K Zhirkov and @chriswratil.bsky.social

This is a paper in a series where @fabianneuner.bsky.social @bcastanho.bsky.social & here also K. Zhirkov & I have found that thin populism does *not* drive the attraction of populists — but rather their policy positions. We definitely expected the opposite, when we started (almost 10 years ago).

Do people vote for populist parties like the AfD or die Linke due to the parties' (thin) populist appeals? We suggest that host ideology is a more important driver of populism than thin ideology (w/ K. Zhirkov, @bcastanho.bsky.social, @chriswratil.bsky.social) www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
