Oh lord. This is dystopian. Or Orwellian. Or something really not good. I teach students that science can speak truth to power, and that if authoritarian rulers want to dominate knowledge where science is valued, science poses an extra barrier that must be attacked. And so it is. On multiple fronts.

Although it is frequently discussed, AfD support appears only weakly correlated with objective economic conditions. The unemployment rate or the disposable income per capita of a municipality correlate only weakly with the AfD's vote share and its gains compared to 2019.
