The only reasonable position is zero tolerance: the AI industry must end sooner rather than later. It is culturally, socially, environmentally, and economically destructive, and all the Silicon Valley marketing in the world isn't going to make it otherwise.

There is no ethical use of AI because the continued existence of the AI industry is directly harmful to (alongside everyone else) the interests of everyone whose labour makes books exist—writers of fiction & nonfiction, illustrators, translators, researchers, editors, everyone.

Going into 2026, a reminder for everyone who's fallen off the creative wagon, game dev, writing, art, music, whatever, no matter how long:

I had writers block while overdue on my deadline for Carnalis (out in March). I was dealing with a lot of overwhelm from life events this year & instead of using AI, I spent time figuring out what the story needed. The joy of everything clicking into place is what the creative process is all about!

And just like that, SFWA capitulates. Keep fighting. It works.

How does this keep happening? Why are literary orgs and events and granting bodies so out of touch with how generative AI is perceived by the creatives who make up their communities? If you don't like humanity leave the humanities.

I promise, if they can do calculus and determine that saying Palestinians should not be murdered is too political, they won’t be taking any risks on your behalf. Look for solidarity somewhere else.
