In a writer networking workshop I run, I ask attendees to think about the coolest person they want to meet. Then I ask what they’d offer them as a peer (this could be anything!). If there’s no answer, it isn’t time to network in that room. …a specific type of attendee rarely has an answer.

So often cis white male writers in our spaces attend with an extraction mindset, not a community mindset. They want to extract praise, attention, time, and energy from the people around them. They do not consider what they’re giving in return. Then they’re shocked when this limits their careers.

It is more important to create than submit work to submit work than worry about being published to publish at all than be too precious about where or when to have work read than get awards to be nominated at all than win— And it is more important to make what you love than never risk failing.

If magazine teams were paid fairly and writer rates increased, mag budgets would be $200k+. Minimum. If you can, subscribe. That’s regular, renewable revenue mags can use to plan for the future. This industry is sustained on free labour and free content. Passion is high, but so is burnout.

When I took my first writing workshop, On Spec was the only active SFF mag in Canada—and an inspiration when I launched Augur 3 years later. That was 13 years ago. They made space where there wasn’t for specfic in Canlit & set the stage for the many Canadian editors who’ve launched mags since.
