Being precise with language matters, because being able to hold authority to account on social media is one of the most important things it can *do* right now, and fascist regimes are already describing that activity as “harsssment”, while denying that targeting of the vulnerable counts as such.

because setting up the site and keeping the servers running is the easy part. people (and their money) is the hard part.

How are you going to moderate it? How are you going to talk to your users when they get mad about how you are or are not moderating it? How are you going to monitor it? How are you going to handle users inventing new ways to misuse your service for evil that aren't against your current ToS?

I'm not saying a social media site like bluesky/twitter/mastodon is fundamentally unworkable, but if you're going to build a new one, you need to figure out how you're going to run it as a social network first, emphasis on social.

and money. which is a social issue, not a technical one. The "we'll sell ads!" model fundamentally has a scaling problem. You need a bajillion users to make enough money to pay for your servers, but human moderation is expensive, and automated/AI moderation is unreliable and gameable
