I once spent a good chunk of a lazy afternoon at the community pool watching a girl – maybe 6, 7 years old – work up the courage to jump off the diving board. She spent what felt like hours; toes off the end of the board, knees bent, eyes closed and head shaking. Her fear was palpable.
