Excellent long-form piece on the sudden firing of Peggy Carr, former head of the National Center of Education Statistics. Loved how the article illustrated how Carr earned such wide bipartisan respect. Which makes DOGE's slapdash destruction to education data initiatives & staff all the more 🤯.

UPDATE: Ed Dept just announced this afternoon that it is giving acting IES director Matthew Soldner a second title: acting commissioner of NCES. The lack of a commissioner had been the obstacle to releasing the NAEP science scores.

Tech glitches at ED. Both NCES and IES websites went down for > 9 hours from midnight ET last night to 9am ET this morning. Researchers said they were unable to make tables using datalab and powerstats yesterday. But all is back and running now. IT employees at ED were part of mass firings in March.

The Southern Education Foundation (SEF) received formal notice from @usedgov.bsky.social that its Equity Assistance Center-South (EAC-South) grant has been reinstated. SEF serves public school districts and 11 states to help them comply with federal civil rights law. (1/2)
