I’m a doctoral student at TXST. The feeling on campus is worse than you imagine. Faculty afraid to speak, grad students feel like they could lose their entire futures if they draw the university president’s ire, undergrads openly worrying about the complete loss of a fundamental right.

No one actually human wants that. I firmly believe most students, most teachers and most parents are all on the same side here against the AI pushers and the Silicon Valley cultists and all the rest of them. But we have to actually create a world where using AI is both disrespected and unnecessary.

I know I often sound like I hate my job, but the fact is, I like putting in the hours and doing the work, as long as you don’t make that the entirety of my job description, and that is what the US collectively thinks teaching is in 2025. Not helping kids learn or grow, but just spending our energy.

If you’re a parent or someone else to whom a school board will actually listen, now’s the time to go find out whether your district is spending money on PD for the Bullshit Machine and then crawl up the responsible asses to find out why they’re doing that. That’s your kids they’re playing with.

But we’re human beings too, who have kids and sick parents and side projects and frankly, at this point, a country that insists we solve every societal ill via education while making it clear that what will get you places isn’t learning anything, it’s hustling and toadying to the right rich people.

Until right around the time the person who wrote the Reddit post started teaching, every message I got from my administrators during my whole career was that I should be waste away every fiber of body, mind and soul on my students, and I should be happy that I get to do it because it’s so authentic.

This sucks, but if there is a single gossamer of silver lining here, it’s that I maintain the only way you’re going to get society at large to turn against AI use is for teachers to start using it. Our whole thing as a profession is that we aren’t supposed to cut corners when everyone else does.
