ACTION COMICS #47 (April 1942): 80 year old Superman comics telling readers who the real "super" villains are.

I just finished the behemoth (treasury-like trim size, 415 pages) that is the Atlas Artist Edition No. 2 - featuring Al Williamson: “The City that Time Forgot” and Other Stories. Incredible book - so happy to have been able to buy it at a 35% discount some months ago. Highest recommendation!

The factual record:

From: DICK AYERS Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 "So... regarding those Kirby / Ayers signatures... I always put the signatures on our work together just as I always sign my work. I noticed that the "whiteouts" were happening and it sure didn't make me happy."

Lee began not only signing the Ditko-Lee stories (but no others in the genres) but began to systematically remove/cover up the "Kirby & Ayers" signatures on many stories signed that way by Ayers. Lee also began placing blurb promotions for Ditko-Lee stories on front covers drawn by Jack Kirby.

After Lee took over the popular title began to sell poorly and was soon cancelled.

Two months later Lee takes over the existing title (AMAZING ADVENTURES) and changing the name to AMAZING ADULT FANTASY using it as a showcase for the Ditko-Lee tales.

In October of 1961 (same month as FF #1) Lee suddenly shows an interest in the genres signing stories involving Steve Ditko.

At Marvel during the 1958-late 1961 period Lee showed no interest in the various monster-mystery-fantasy titles being published by Goodman. Available sales records and Goodman's publication history suggest those titles were buoying Goodman's line at that time.

TALES TO ASTONISH #32, March 8, 1962 was published two months prior to the first appearance of Spider-Man in AMAZING FANTASY #15. According to Stan Lee, Kirby was unable to draw a character who wasn't heroic looking. The protagonist here is Henry Fuller. I've changed the name to Peter Parker.

Jack Kirby reported several times he brought in character and story presentations on spec. COMICS FEATURE #44 (1986). Kirby, Ditko and others would create a character or story idea as a freelancer without any expectation their presentation would be purchased. Not a "work for hire" relationship.

Dick Ayers wrote a story called for TWO-GUN KID #61 called "And Not A Word Was Spoken." The story contained no dialogue. Ayers says when he requested a story credit Lee told him, "Since when did you develop an ego? Get out of here!” Lee took the script credit and pay for a story written by Ayers.
