I rewatched THE DIRTY DOZEN recently and it reminded me that the concept for that film was inspired by the story "The Filthy Thirteen" by Arch Whitehouse in TRUE, Oct. 1944, which we reprinted in the MEN'S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #5, the Dirty Missions issue (amzn.to/4jWMvyU). The Pearl Harbor anniversary always reminds me of the fact-based story written by my late friend Robert F. Dorr, "Yank Ace Who Battled the Japs Over Pearl Harbor." It's included in our collection of Bob's classic men's adventure magazine stories, A HANDFUL OF HELL (amzn.to/2DSeEDQ).

Frank Loesser's song “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!” made that phrase famous. Few people knew he was quoting Lieutenant Howell Forgy, Chaplain of the USS New Orleans. Forgy said those words to his shipmates on December 7, 1941 during the surprise attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor.

RIP Tom Stoppard. I’ve been a fan of his since the ‘60s. I especially love his play ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, later adapted into a great film starring Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, the movie SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, which he scripted, and the Terry Gilliam movie BRAZIL, which he co-wrote.
