heard a discussion on whether it's sane to avoid advertising to the point where your workarounds are more annoying than the ads itself, and I think people need to get better at treating ads as Environmental Hazards and not mere inconveniences. To me it's like avoiding secondhand smoke.

In both those examples, the problem isn't the inconvenience of coughing or the potential for getting your shoes wet, it's the literal environmental hazard and its consequences on your health - in advertising's case, mental health instead of physical.
