Funders - ever wondered what it might look like to implement the TOP guidelines? Here, COS shows how they've done so with the updated (2025) guidelines in their own work as a pass-through funder. Take aways? TOP is a modular, customizable framework that can be tweaked for a variety of settings.

Peer Review is broken because a generation of Editors were trained that peer review is sacrosanct. Thus we have Editors who are clerks, sending and re-sending manuscripts to reviewers until they are happy. That's not the job. Be an Editor, not a clerk. Use your skill and judgement. Make decisions.

I'm drafting a paper with a collaborator in which we are trying to sell a model with penalised splines. It's opened up a discussion on the 'correspondence' between penalties and priors. Below are some excerpts from an email I sent to my coauthor. This is something I struggle to communicate.

I really dislike opinionated teaching. I don't think teachers should tell students 'but this view is wrong' - you should teach students to evaluate the arguments for and against, and expect (and even want!) some students to disagree with you after they reach their own conclusion.

The gap between vaccination sentiment and what's possible with vaccine technology is incredibly sad. We are living through a golden age of vaccine development. By turning away from investing in them, we risk losing out on many breakthroughs around the corner.

This is a really ingenious idea of creating a bluesky account for each individual scientific paper, providing a means to follow papers and discuss them and ultimately free them from the prison of the publishing industry.

Here's a suggestion for a New Year's resolution: If you see influential bad research, say something. One part of the whole replication crisis story is that a lot of psychological researchers privately knew that a lot of stuff was bad, but it wasn't discussed publicly.

A hope for 2026 is that this perspective piece with @wiringthebrain.bsky.social & @deevybee.bsky.social will serve as a template for others who are similarly frustrated with with exaggerated claims and double speak around so much of research. It's ok to point out that the emperor has no clothes!
