Why am I doing a PhD in this? Because life can be boring and brutal and unfair, my younger brother got cancer, I see marriages falling apart and anxiety all around me. So I felt like doing something absolutely ridiculous with my short time on earth as a huge eff you to the uncaring cosmos.

There is a database of 21stC sightings called the Fairy Census available free online, and a society dedicated to promoting and researching it. There is a really interesting new trend, and I’m hoping to get a short article out on it in the new year. No spoilers just yet!

I think it will come out that the BBC have been using AI to “clean up” Attenborough’s voice for Asia and Parenthood. Listen to him two or three years ago and then listen to him today, mysteriously rejuvenated. Has he had an operation or speech therapy or something? The improvement is remarkable.

I collect pictures of gate latches. The endless minute variations and human ingenuity appeal to me greatly, and the countless hands that have moved them. This one is between Near and Far Sawrey, Lake District and has a lovely combination of textures between the iron, wooden gate, and stone gatepost.
