What strikes me about that result is just how far ahead the Greens were compared to Reform. Again an anti-Reform coalition manifests and it's not actually close

Worth noting that even if Labour and the Greens had split the vote exactly evenly – the absolute worst case scenario for the stop Reform majority in the seat – Matt Goodwin still didn’t have enough votes to sneak a victory.

But it is another example of how Reform boost turnout for progressive parties. They are so profoundly toxic. When you put it alongside the Tories losing their deposit, the right have a serious problem.

What we have seen in Gorton and Denton is what we saw in Caerphilly in October. A lot of people really don’t want the hateful politics of Reform and will work hard and smart to try and keep them out. Labour must now listen to this and stop the grim attempts to mimic Farage.

Even allowing for the low bar for pre-announcement filling, the BBC commentators’ coverage of the Denton & Gorton by-election is vapid, superficial, stereotyping and sycophantic to the far right.

Please note I’ve not actually stayed up for the Gorton & Denton results like a pundit, it’s just the cat woke me up in the middle of the night.

Sounds like the BBC are currently preparing the ground for Reform's explanation for why it isn't a big deal.
