Okay, I'm spoiling the answer because I'm dying to show you more photos. This gorgeous Laughing Kookaburra landed beside a path facing away from me. I cautiously approached and photographed its rear, thinking it'd be all I got, but it stayed put as I got closer and closer! #birds

Snowberry Clearwings, a hummingbird moth and a bumblebee mimic. These moths are less common than the other hummingbird moth commonly seen, the Hummingbird Clearwing, here in Michigan. There's a third hummingbird moth that I haven't seen yet that lives in Michigan, a Slender Clearwing.

A Sandhill Crane was strolling down the boardwalk, much to the displeasure of the Red-winged Blackbirds. Sandhill Cranes will eat Red-winged Blackbirds eggs and nestlings, so the Red-winged Blackbirds were attacking and doing their best to drive the Crane away.

The other day I drew a subway-style map for The Hobbit, and it was very well received. Some of you asked if I could do one for LoTR, so I have! Forgive the eel watermark; I'm working on making these something you can buy, if you like.

After a little rest in my office, the grebe had recovered enough that I took it back down to the local pond, where it showed how ridiculously cool their feet are at walking on water. Best part of my day by a long shot.

Happy 2 part story - today I was sitting at my office desk and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a bird hit my neighbors fence … turns out it was a grebe! I’ve never had the chance to see one before but their legs are so adapted for swimming that they can barely walk on land! Look at its feet!

12th July 2025 Clyve’s ‘cooking show’ audience tonight. Our wild birds were all fascinated by the goings on in the kitchen.

I just had a most magical moment in my backyard. This fledgling pileated woodpecker decided to practice foraging in my old woodpile. He was doing quite well and looking very grown up until Mom came back to check on him. Then, he was back into full baby mode. Such an amazing experience. 🪶🌿
