I typically have a hard time telling the Downy Woodpeckers apart, but this lovely one has very big white stripes on her noggin so she's easy to pick out.

While some Eastern Bluebirds migrate for the winter, most here in southeast Michigan will hang around and dine on fruits and berries. Sticking around means these birds get first choice at nesting sites come spring.

A Eastern Gray Squirrel that looks like he/she just finished eating. Judging by the leftover bits it looks like the meal was an acorn. These squirrels bury thousands of nuts in the fall and use their excellent sense of smell to help find them later.

You'll have to look closely, but this Brown Creeper has caught some small insect that looks like a flying ant. Maybe it is a flying ant? Whatever the insect is, this Brown Creeper hunted it down by looking under bits of bark.

One of my backyard visitors, a Carolina Wren. I have a big pile of branches in the back that they enjoy bopping around in.

Happy National Squirrel Day! This American Red Squirrel, also known as a Pine Squirrel, perched on this branch for a moment before launching off. These squirrels are territorial, often chasing away much larger squirrels.

Most Downy Woodpeckers have a bold black stripe that goes along the side of the face, with the black stripe going from the top of the eye to the bottom. This woodpecker has the black stripe, but it's much smaller; it starts from the middle of the eye. I think it looks cute.

I have a hard telling the Tufted Titmice apart, but I can recognize this one. This bird has a bit of fluff on the left wing. This feather has been like this since last Fall. It'll eventually molt away but for now it's fun to tell when this particular little one is around.

Red-headed Woodpeckers will stay here year-round in southeastern Michigan, unless food is scarce. If they cannot find enough acorns and nuts to cache — these birds are one of the few woodpeckers that cache food — they will head south.

A Northern Flicker (lower left), a bird who likes ants, was following around a Pileated Woodpecker, who was hammering out holes in tree while looking for ants. After the Pileated would leave a spot, the Flicker would check it out to see if there were any ants leftover.
