I'm doing well! I never could have dreamed I'd be doing this well ten years ago. I'm still not spending more than $100 on anything without wanting to cry about it because I expect to be destitute the moment literally anything goes wrong.

The Economy being good means nothing to me because it's a measure of how confident assholes feel in their line going up, and everything they do to make the line go up hurts me and devastates everyone who's doing worse than me. This isn't fucking rocket surgery.

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

I am curious about the effect that almost everyone I know, even people who are doing relatively well, thinks they would be more successful economically if they sacrificed their ethical principles and just became a grifter of some sort.

If you can fix that - by giving students more time if they need it, by doing piecework assignments with iterated feedback - you can almost eliminate LLM use. Add in assignments that are hard for LLMs to do, and it's almost entirely gone (at least among my students).

Also, I'll note that, in my experience, very few students are using LLMs cynically. Mostly, they do it for the reason that students have always cheated: they don't feel like they can do an assignment, and so the 0 they'll get for cheating is about the same as the 0 they'll get otherwise.

But that arms race isn't an inherent feature of university education: it's a consequences of funding changes that create competition for student dollars, and incentivize schools to reduce standards to meet demand. Fix that problem, by funding higher education at 1990s levels, and you've fixed it.

Today, most state universities are almost entirely tuition dependent. This means that they're competing for students, and that creates an enormous temptation to make things a little easier, in order to retain students.

I think the part that Zach's missing here is how this tension is impacted by the changing nature of university economics. Traditionally, the universities that most students went to in the US were *heavily* subsidized by the government. In the past 30 years, that's changed.

Those skills and ways of thinking (it's generally the latter that matter, as the skills students need are constantly changing, but the ways of thinking aren't) are hard. They take work. For some students, this leads to an arms race, as they try and get the credential with the lease amount of effort.

In this thread, Zach is getting at the fundamental tension of higher education: many (not all) students are coming to us for a credential. Our job is to get them to learn certain skills and ways of thinking before we give them that credential. This leads to an unfortunate tension.
