Good point. Although there's weak evidence of an ASD-acetaminophen link, there's somewhat stronger evidence of links between ASD and environmental ills that, unlike acetaminophen, have no offsetting virtues. Why not go after those first, instead of targeting a drug that relieves a lot of suffering?

The owners say mounting financial troubles and a lack of consensus on next steps prompted the closure.

the policy landscape of education is bleak dude. GOP want to burn public education to the ground and put kids in megachurch clickfarms or homeschool them so dems are sort of the only game in town if you actually give a shit about schools, and the lib education establishment is plenty flawed

"Democrats should create social clubs and provide extensive constituent services!" Okay while I don't disagree with that, a whole lot of you won't admit you supported the Democratic nominee in the last election without doing a "but we all know I don't really support Democrats" catechism first.

like this feels to me like people forget *why* OH/NE/IA vote red now and are trying to rationalize it for why the party as a whole needs to move to the centre

I found Bernie 2016’s rhetoric repulsive as a man with a fancy Econ degree but I will cede that I think it’s exactly the model of “moderation” that probably would work best. “Trans issues are a distraction from how the greedy grocery stores are price gouging you”

I mean we had strong leadership during the Obama years in the form of Pelosi and everyone hates her. People like the party being weak and useless because weak and useless parties are easier to extract concessions from.

Like Trump’s weakest point right now is tariffs but you can’t really push back against them too much because no one wants Shawn Fain issuing a fatwa against them as the greatest enemy of workers who harbors a personal hatred against Michigan and Pennsylvania

agreed! but then you have to deal with the issue that the average voter basically shares Sirota's folk theory of politics (e.g. we must fight the "Blackrock bastards" who are using leverage to make housing expensive) instead of actual good policy that provides abundance

I mean, Sirota is being a dick, but also I understand the abundance theory to be "it will work to lower prices and then voters will be happy"

i feel like this is the dialectical contraction between popularism and abundance: if your goal is to essentially lower costs and produce more goods (housing/energy/etc): you are odds with the folk theory of politics the average voter holds

yo, if you're not willing to describe justice thomas as anti-liberal then i really don't know wtf liberalism means to you unless your answer is "what it meant to the german middle classes in 1849" in which case i'd say "ok cool that's not liberalism by any serious modern understanding of the term"

I don’t wanna get fatalistic and I think we should do everything we can on every front we can, but I also think looking at Biden’s popularity as strictly Biden’s fault, either for age or for Gaza or for messaging or whatever, is fundamentally question-begging.

People care more about prices going up than their wages going up is part of it, but we shouldn't neglect that the Democrats are Mom and the Republicans are Dad, and voters were mad at Mom for telling them they couldn't see their friends in 2020, even if Dad was in office at the time.

I mean some of them are new! (From covid, basically) But also like... I dunno, it's a whole twisted thing, where like, we don't really like Trump but we also aren't really prepared to do the things it would take to shut him out of our politics, and so people just kind of got resigned to him?

I always made fun of pre-2020 German politicians that were afraid of inflation like the Plague, turns out they were right!! Prices rising are the one thing that cuts through every messaging, chart and metric that you can throw at people, it is not even irrational per se!
