I think this is REM’s finest album, and as this is the centrepiece of the record it is their finest hour. It’s a brilliant song- the lyrics are some of Stipe’s finest.

For me it was hearing Nightswimming on the radio, thinking wow. This is different and beautiful. I popped to the record store and bought AFTP and Reckoning. Listened to Reckoning, and it was like nothing my 10 year old self had ever heard.

Same but Life's Rich Pageant. It was revelatory to think they were just some guys who lived over in Athens. I didn't really think about bands coming from any old where like that.

Yup, landmark moment. I remember specifically listening to the chart show on Sunday just to hear the new R.E.M single, it didn’t disappoint. I suppose the key difference for me was the fulller, richer sound compared to, say Green. The mandolin didn’t really surprise me after stuff like Hairshirt.

Oh yes. Blame the mandolin if you like. A wtf moment indeed.

Hearing that song at age 14 when it came out and being a kid in Georgia pretty much set me on a path for life.
