Knitted creatures for a good cause, how can you go wrong?

If you embroider or cross-stitch & are interested in mutual aid, I think that I'm going to organize an event where folks can sell their work and donate a percentage of proceeds to a couple of local mutual aid groups. May 16 or 23. I need to find a location here in NYC. I'll circle back with details.

I personally don't tell people who have been fighting their hearts out daily for weeks not to celebrate wins of any size. I certainly don't do that when I've been nowhere near the place where the fight has been happening and have done little more than make some donations from miles away.

I think a lot of us get hope wrong. Hope, I do not believe, is an emotion. In fact, hope makes space for lots of emotions to exist alongside it. You can DO hope scared, angry, sad etc... Hope doesn't find us. We make hope through action and struggle. It's a practice of living and is re-made daily.

To put an even sharper point on it... The moral call is to BEAR witness, not to consumption. In other words: to testimony, not passively offering eyeballs to horrific content.

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

People get their news via social media these days. Newspapers always have a comics section, because if there's not something good to look forward to, people stop showing up to learn about the bad. So post your art &don't feel bad about it. We're the cheese wrapped around these hard to swallow pills.

Once again: Focusing on their lack of training is a mistake. With "better training," their violence would simply cost more, and they would still kill whoever they wanted, but make it look more professional — to make people more comfortable, the way many of you are at ease with local police violence.

Also. As someone who's gone through trauma-counselling: play Tetris or similar for twenty minutes. Do the 5 senses grounding technique: 1 thing you can touch, two things you can smell etc.

We know what is happening at this point. You can listen to people you trust who have watched, and amplify their narrative descriptions. There is no need to traumatize yourself, and frankly I think there is a spiritual danger in habituating yourself to this violence.
