The truest writing advice I've ever come across. It also applies equally to practicing an instrument.

I have a long standing practice of setting daily word counts for writing projects just to get in front of my laptop and see what happens. I cannot tell you how valuable this has been because they don't have to be good. They just have to be words on the page. I can revise later.

This is what I desperately needed to see first thing in the morning. 348 words done!

Goddamn if this skeet didn't just knock me out of the little writing rut I've been in. And I do feel better.

Boy I wish the executives doing my functioning were working with me right now. I think writing 200 words would fix me. Not like permanently but like during my lunch period at least.

None of this is going to survive the draft except for the idea of one paragraph that will be cut in the final pass when you recognize it was a darling that carried you the entire time. Who cares? Just write it down

How are people skipping the whole “lay the pages of the manuscript all over the bed” stage?

Um.

I don't know why this is, but printing a manuscript is like shining a black light on a draft: suddenly you can see all the mess and know exactly what crimes you committed. That shit DOES work.

Man this is so right. I love printing out someone’s draft and marking it up by hand but everyone hates it lol. Maybe it’s just nostalgia bc every draft I have to my PhD advisor was back on my desk the next morning with pen all over it.

Write digital, edit analog.

I might be one of the last BFA student who had to print everything out for workshops and by the time you got to 400 level everything was so long you had to have the copy center do it for you and they’d give you your copies back in a box

I'm a millennial With a Printer, which I got for school and her primary function these days is printing out drafts of writing for me to edit with a fun colored gel pen. Then it goes in a big binder with the first draft, which is handwritten on legal pads.

i remember writing when cut and paste literally meant scissors and tape

I did this once for a writing class where we edited by physically cutting out pieces and moving them around.

I bought a real thesaurus like six weeks ago and I have reclaimed a part of my brain the machines colonized decades ago. 10/10, highly recommend.

Not a boomer take. There's something wonderful about holding a finished draft in your hands, no matter how much editing you might have to do get it ready for publication. Just holding that draft, feeling its weight and heft, makes the whole process more real.

The lids of two boxes of printer paper pushed one inside the other make an excellent A4-sized box for sending your ream of printed proofs to your proofreader

better yet, write with blood and clay on a cave wall

Learning this is a boomer take because some people do write on their phones, but wait until I tell you kids about printing the whole thing out and editing it by hand like you live in the 1800s because that shit works. Grab a candle and a quill if you want to do this right
