The average life expectancy of a new Russian recruit—from arrival at a training ground to death in a combat zone—lies somewhere between 10 days and three weeks. Once sent onto the battlefield, they survive an average of 20 to 35 minutes.

When Vance says "the deep state took down Richard Nixon," he isn't just defending Nixon, he's attacking the idea that Congress, courts, and a free press can check a president who abuses power. The goal is to normalize presidential impunity. For Trump now. Potentially or Vance later.

One of my "favorite" dumb Musk things is his deeply held belief that other people aren't real. One of his first moves after taking over Twitter was to try to fire "ghost employees," of which he thought they were many. He's a murderous bigot but he also thinks Fake People are robbing him blind.

Biden's presidency and the aftermath we're living through should be enough to destroy the "let's the turn page, let's look forward, let's move on" mantra that has animated centrist Democrats for decades now. Accountability matters. There has to be a reckoning.

This is an excellent (if self-congratulatory) point. Normal people think: "I would never do this. If Trump is doing it, it must be under duress." But people like Trump do bad stuff because they like doing bad stuff, not because someone is forcing them to contravene their own principles.

Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise. He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media. The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.
