I'm sorry, but I don't understand the "they went too far" line. At all. Who specifically went where? Why was this "too far"? It's seemingly a throw away line to try and make anything else sound "reasonable", including wholesale second class citizenship.

I started doing this and it helps immensely. I also do it with character names or even individual words I know aren't good but work enough. You don't need to write the final draft first time, you just need the foundation built. It's so much easier to invent better ideas once a scene already exists.
